Student Council approved a budget to allow for the allocation of funds to its various committees this summer at its general body meeting Tuesday night. The total budget allocates $21,593.33 — $453.31 less than the 2018 summer budget.

Student Council passed a bill during their general body meeting Tuesday evening to create an ad hoc committee on “Renaming, Recontextualizing, and Removal.” According to the bill, the committee will be responsible for “examining the history of various monuments, buildings, and historical areas on grounds, conducting interviews with stakeholders and historical experts, and creating a final report on what actions are recommended regarding each area of interest.”

Before his first meeting with University President Jim Ryan as Student Council president, Alex Cintron said he debated if it was necessary to wear a formal jacket, shirt and tie for the discussion. Instead, to the meeting with Ryan, Cintron opted to wear a Guayabera, a casual four-pocket shirt popular in Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean.

Student Council held its annual inauguration ceremony Sunday in the Chapel to swear in officers elected by the student body in February and reflect on the past Student Council term. Approximately 40 people attended the ceremony, most of them current, incoming or outgoing Student Council members.

Student Council’s Representative Body voted unanimously to pass a resolution in support of the Muslim communities of New Zealand, Charlottesville, the United States and the world during their general body meeting Tuesday. The resolution follows the terrorist attack in New Zealand March 15 when an armed gunman and white supremacist killed 50 people at the Al Noor Mosque and the Linwood Muslim Centre in Christchurch, New Zealand.

Alex Cintron, a fourth-year College student and Student Council president, announced during Tuesday’s Student Council General Body meeting that the University’s Office of Facilities Management will install and stock machines that dispense free pads and tampons in women’s restrooms around Grounds.

Third-year College student and current Chair of the Representative Body Ellie Brasacchio announced the appointment of Ellen Yates to the position of chief of cabinet at Student Council’s general body meeting Tuesday. Yates is a second-year College student and the current Student Life Committee chair.

Third-year College student Ellie Brasacchio was elected Student Council President Friday, winning 89.1 percent of the University-wide vote. According to data from the University Board of Elections, voter turnout for the Student Council race was 12.6 percent, down by nearly a third from last year when voter turnout was 18.8 percent.

Student Council’s Sustainability Committee received a nearly $10,000 grant earlier this month from the Equity and Environment Fund. Nina Morris, the sustainability outreach and engagement manager for the University’s Office for Sustainability, wrote in an email to The Cavalier Daily that the fund “is set up to support students/student groups for community-based initiatives or projects that sit at the intersection of equity, justice, and sustainability.”

The Student Council Representative Body voted unanimously Tuesday to confirm the appointment of second-year College student Diana Gaiter as chair of the Diversity Engagement Committee. The committee was established in April 2018 and is tasked with cooperating with multicultural student organizations and University administration on issues relating to diversity and aims to offer resources for students from a variety of backgrounds.

Brendan Nigro, a fourth-year College student and the student member to the University’s Board of Visitors, announced at a general body meeting of Student Council Tuesday that U.Va. will no longer be implementing 24/7 parking fees at the Central Grounds Parking Garage next month. In recent weeks, the announcement of the 24/7 fee at the garage has sparked criticism among students regarding safety concerns for those who may not be able to afford the new fees late at night and would choose to walk instead of drive home.
