At a special session meeting Sunday night, Student Council passed SR 21-39 denouncing the University’s decision to rename and rededicate the Frank Hume Memorial, insteading of removing it in its entirety. The representative body also passed SR 21-40, a resolution calling on Housing and Residence Life to contract with the housing service Rent College Pads once its contract with Apartments.com expires at the end of this year.

The MRC pledged to continue pushing for the removal of the Frank Hume Memorial Wall — a Confederate monument also known as the Whispering Wall — in a statement released June 7. Rather than removing the wall entirely, the Board of Visitors approved a resolution June 4 to remove the inscription on the wall, which currently reads “a devoted Virginian who served his native state in Civil War and Legislative Hall,” and replace it with contrasting blocks.

Members of the representative body passed SR 21-36, a resolution supporting the For the People Act, and discussed SB 21-35, the proposed summer budget at a May 4 Student Council meeting. At a special session meeting May 5, representatives voted to pass the summer budget.

Members of the new Student Council administration took their oaths of office and members of the former administration stepped out of their roles at a transition ceremony in Garden IX Sunday afternoon. Third-year College student Abel Liu was sworn in as Student Council president while third-year College student Ceci Cain and second-year College student Ryan Cieslukowski were sworn in as vice president for administration and vice-president for organizations, respectively. Third-year College student Ryan Alcorn also stepped into his role as chief of cabinet.

Student Council passed SR 21-24, which asks the University to support the urgent financial need of students, faculty and staff, as well as SR 21-25, which asks the University to transition to open educational resources, at its general body meeting Tuesday night. One resolution demanding that students be given the option to recite the pledge of allegiance at Student Council meetings — SR 21-21 — failed to pass while two others — SR 21-22 and SR 21-23 — were tabled. SR 21-22 addressed controversial comments made by Charlottesville Mayor Nikuyah Walker and SR 21-23 demanded the preservation of monuments, memorials and statues on Grounds.

Student Council’s representative body approved SB21-18, which will amend Student Council bylaws to create the Survivor Support and Prevention Coalition and Advocacy Board, at its weekly meeting Tuesday night. The bill was passed unanimously.

There is more on the University Elections ballot this semester than just the race for Student Council president. Candidates’ positions on Student Council, the Honor Committee, the University Judiciary Committee, School Councils and Class Councils are up for election. Four referenda from Student Council and UJC are also awaiting student votes.
