While the period between finishing high school and starting college is typically a few months, some students embark on a longer journey by taking a gap year, which may entail traveling abroad, working locally or volunteering for a non-profit organization. Many gap-year students initially have doubts about taking a year off from school, but the experience was worthwhile for these four University students. A gap year solidified their career goals, prepared them for college and broadened their outlooks on the world.

Balloons and banners adorned Shannon Library Thursday afternoon as members of the University and Charlottesville communities celebrated the library’s grand opening. While the building initially opened Jan. 8, the grand opening formally recognized the building’s three-year long renovation and honored more recent changes, particularly the library’s new name.

Most transactions on the Corner are simply monetary exchanges between buyer and seller. But to Hiren Patel, business partner at the 14th Street 7 Day Junior convenience store, check-out means more than over-the-counter small talk. Known fondly as “Harry,” Patel greets passersby on the Corner with lively conversation and a familiar smile, nurturing a sense of community with students that extends far beyond his store.

While some look at a junkyard and see heaps of plastic, broken materials and tattered cloth, the researchers behind the “Waste Not, Want Not” project see an opportunity. Aiming to mitigate the environmental impact of scrapped resources, the research team spent the last summer and fall repurposing waste into functional items. They unveiled their projects from the last six months to the public Monday at Campbell Corner Gallery and held a gallery talk Friday to showcase their progress towards a more sustainable man-made environment.

While the University helps provide students with a plethora of dining options, both internally and through external organizations, Charlottesville City reports an 11.8 percent food insecurity rate, almost 4 percent higher than the average in Virginia. FoodAssist, a chapter of the Food Recovery Network, is completely student-run and aims to reduce food waste by transporting extra food from restaurants to local shelters and food pantries.

After working tirelessly to obtain admission at one of the nation’s top universities, undergoing the tumultuous process of registering for classes, finding a roommate and adjusting to their first year away from home, many University students do not have time to take a breath before they have their next mountain to scale — looking for off-Grounds housing.

The Persian Culture Society at the University hosted their Nowruz celebration Saturday from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the Newcomb Ballroom — families, friends and community members gathered before a stage and a table at the front and center decorated with Haft-Sin. Haft-Sin is a tradition meant to symbolize hopes for a happy new year. Literally translating to the “seven S,” the table is adorned with seven objects, including apples, garlic, vinegar and other items which all start with the letter S in Farsi.
