The Minority Rights Coalition announced Tuesday United For Undergraduate Socioeconomic Diversity will have a representative at MRC meetings beginning March 18. UFUSED is the first to join the coalition since the Native American Student Union in 2010.

In an effort to improve current safety procedures, the University is requiring fraternities to sign the new Fraternal Organization Agreement addendum by Jan. 16 as part of an agreement lifting a suspension on Greek social activities first enacted in November. The addendum comes out of intense scrutiny of the University Greek system following a Nov. 19 Rolling Stone article, later retracted, alleging a gang rape at the University’s chapter of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity.

The release of Rolling Stone’s article “A Rape on Campus: A Brutal Assault and Struggle for Justice at UVA,” published Nov. 19, shook the University community to its core. The article detailed the story of then-first year student Jackie, who was allegedly gang raped at a party at the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity house in Sept. 2012. The article's author also criticized the University administration’s response to Jackie's and other sexual assault survivor's stories.

Thanks to a donation from Blue Ridge Capital President and Board of Visitors member John Griffin, a 1985 Commerce School graduate, 107 members of the Class of 2018 became recipients of the Blue Ridge Scholarship, a full scholarship for high-achieving, low-income students. In its inaugural year, the scholarship has helped academically gifted and financially deserving first years offset the costs of attending the University.

With the 2016 presidential election just two years away, a newly-formed student committee is leading an effort to bring a presidential debate to the University. Dubbed the Commission for 2016, the group hopes to help the University submit a proposal to the Commission on Presidential Debates.

Democratic members of the Virginia House of Delegates elected Del. Scott Surovell, D-Fairfax, as caucus chairman late last week. The position is focused on helping Democratic leaders in the House of Delegates and to promote the interests of the party.
