It is a truth universally acknowledged that we tend to covet what we can’t have — I’m sure even Jane Austen herself would concede this. Whether this be your friend’s ex-boyfriend, the latest pair of Yeezys or that one sweater you once saw online, didn’t buy and have spent the past six months trying to find it again, this statement holds true. This truth, however, seems never more applicable than to the University. Your relationship with the University and Charlottesville might just be the most complicated of all, without you realizing it.

As finals approach, those of us who have managed to avoid the library throughout the semester are suddenly faced with the looming choice regarding where to spend the next month. In order to make this decision a little easier, I have compiled a list of places that you can choose from. Instead of flocking straight to Clem or Alderman, consider the breadth of choices available to you in walking distance of Grounds.

Coming from England, I had no previous knowledge about the fact that college sports were a huge deal in United States. Had someone suggested watching a University of Edinburgh soccer match on TV, I probably would have laughed. This is not out of spite, or me demeaning the standard of the play, but because it simply doesn’t exist. Equally, the idea of wearing a University of Edinburgh sweatshirt would probably have had me and my friends in fits of giggles.

If you have been to New York City, you will know that life there moves at an unprecedented pace. In a city where everyone is in a rush, my lack of purpose and motivation was really put into perspective. Granted, I was there as a tourist, but I found myself rushing from gallery to gallery, monument to monument — just to try and fit in with the commuters passing me by at lightning speed.

Every year in January there is a sudden frenzy where everybody you know simultaneously decides that they are going to improve themselves. For the past 11 months, they have been content with their general demeanor, but there is something about January that makes us all question everything. And now that January is beginning to come to a close, I will share with you the progress — or the lack thereof — that I have made this month to try to become a better version of myself.

As far as I’m concerned the University has something for everyone, and this idea extends to the library facilities it offers. However, it seems that there is always that one person in the McGregor Room with a cough, a tendency to chew rather loudly or a blissful ignorance to the fact that music really can travel beyond your own headphones.

Winter has well and truly hit. Shorts have been replaced with leggings, and the days of getting sweaty on the way to class have been replaced with having hot flashes when you come into the heated classrooms from the freezing cold. At a time when the days are suddenly shorter and when 6 p.m. feels like midnight, the mountain of work and proximity to finals can all seem too much. A solution to this can be found in the Danish lifestyle trend of hygge — a therapeutic and gentle way of life that will make this winter immeasurably more bearable.

As an international student, the notion of Thanksgiving is filled less with fond memories of sweet potato and pumpkin pie, and more with the looming reality of a week where everybody goes home to their families. Hence, when I was invited to Portland, Maine for the upcoming Thanksgiving, everything felt like it was coming together — for about five minutes, before I went to book my flights.

As I step off the plane in Washington into the wall of unexpected tropical heat, I swiftly remove seven cozy layers I wore to fend off the chill of a late English summer. (Note to self to check weather forecast next time I pack two semesters worth of jumpers and long trousers).
