Music, like other forms of art, deals with expression. Artists manipulate sound and prose in an attempt to communicate the ineffable, and listeners relate to music that resonates with them. Music helps people understand their feelings or forget about them entirely. This is what gives artists the unique ability of letting their expression speak on the behalf of others, especially when others cannot express themselves as readily. This is why Buckethead is something of an enigma.

Multi-platinum albums, various Grammys and the excesses of fame have defined the The Weeknd’s post-Max Martin career. Creating an album as commercially-successful as “Starboy” is a feat achieved by few and followed up by fewer. When the screenshot of a conversation between Abel Tesfaye, the Weeknd, and La Mar Taylor, his creative director, surfaced with the text “should we drop Friday? I’m indifferent to be honest,” bloggers and fans alike took to social media by storm. No singles had been released, no marketing had been done and no one knew what to expect from pop’s burgeoning favorite.

Language affords people the opportunity to communicate and understand what is otherwise ineffable. The more accurately a phrase describes one’s sentiments, the more alluring and impactful it appears.

First years and returning students alike were likely disappointed when, just days before the concert, the University Programs Council announced that slated Welcome Week performers Future and Lil Yachty, two giants of the rap world, had cancelled their performance. One of the main alleged reasons for the cancellation was the white supremacist rallies of Aug. 11 and 12, as they made celebrities reluctant to visit Charlottesville in the immediate aftermath.

No more phasey, reverbed guitar on every track. No more odes to smoking cigarettes. No more spontaneously losing drumsticks. In his newest album, “This Old Dog,” Mac DeMarco takes a step forward by looking backward.

Few artists with eight albums under their belt and careers spanning over two decades have been able to successfully reinvent their sound while managing to remain relevant. From their early nü-metal stylings to the more introspective, easy-listening rock of “If Not Now, When?,” Incubus has never sought sonic comfort.

Coming back from a seven-year-long absence is no walk in the park for any musical act, especially considering how much has changed within the realm of music. The newfound ease with which we can create and share media is unprecedented, and the ever-increasing pool of new music makes it harder for a given act to achieve mainstream success, let alone career longevity. Jamiroquai is shooting for both on “Automaton.”

The Benign-Violation Theory of humor set forth by Dr. Peter McGraw argues that “humor only occurs when something seems wrong, unsettling or threatening, but simultaneously seems okay, acceptable or safe.” Humor can be slipped into an argument to put an audience at ease, opening them up to extremely controversial ideas — it allows people to convey thoughts that might not be acceptable in a more sober context. Dave Chappelle does exactly this in “The Age of Spin” and “Deep in the Heart of Texas.”

The term “pop artist” is an oxymoron for self-proclaimed music aficionados around the world. With repackaged cookie-cutter ideas constantly being churned out by producers and songwriters, there never seems to be a shortage of pop artists. However, rare individuals who resonate with the masses while avoiding the vapid yet profitable milieu of pop music typically go down in history as musical legends.

The loose, slinky instrumental of “Atrocity Exhibition’s” opener, “Downward Spiral,” is as disorienting as it is revealing. Danny Brown has a message to share, and with lyrics such as “Everybody say, you got a lot to be proud of / Been high this whole time, don’t realize what I done / Cause when I’m all alone, feel like no one care / Isolate myself and don’t go nowhere” appearing on the first track, it's quite easy to discern the gravity of his situation.”

Classifying music by genre is an extremely useful tool for judging the caliber of creativity of a song or piece. Genres create a chain of sonic breadcrumbs, which allow listeners to retrace and discover where their favorite sounds come from. Not to mention, it’s exciting when innovators create music that seem to fit in multiple genres at once.

A brief recounting of the life and career of Iggy Pop makes clear why he deserves to be called a legend: from early collaborations with the late David Bowie to inventing the stage dive.
