The University has been attempting to replicate the success of projects like the Lawn Accessibility Project to alleviate some of the extensive accessibility issues on Grounds. In 2019, the Lawn Accessibility Project installed accessible ramps to provide a critical linkage between the Rotunda and Old Cabell Hall for students and visitors with mobility impairments. The installation of these ramps alleviated the direct need of stairs to travel between these two buildings. Despite these recent advancements, there are still physical and cultural barriers that create ongoing challenges for those with disabilities.

Due to observed rising levels of global warming, spirited debate around climate change has dominated conversation at local, state and national levels for well over a decade. The University has responded to the increased threat of global warming by incorporating new technology aimed towards energy sustainability. Among the crowded field of clean energy techniques that have been implemented, solar power has emerged as one of the most recent examples of the University’s strides towards reducing its carbon footprint.

Efforts spearheaded by two University professors have aided in the recent development of an app that has shown potential to curb the alarmingly high rates of cervical cancer observed in Nicaragua. Following its spring 2021 debut, the Azulado smartphone application has afforded promise that the cancer’s impact across the Caribbean nation may be stymied in the near future.

Recently-published research by researchers from the School of Medicine suggests taking the first steps towards preventing macular degeneration — a leading cause of blindness for people over the age of 50 — is within closer reach than previously thought.
