As rainy summer weather occurs across the United States, students and faculty returning to Charlottesville from summer travels should keep the potential health risks associated with mosquitoes in mind. Rainwater collected in puddles and outdoor receptacles can provide water sources for mosquitos, which lay their eggs in stagnant water.

The School of Medicine has continued progression in its partnership with Inova Health System. When the partnership was first announced in fall of 2016, the affiliation consisted of a joint research institute as well as a regional campus in which medical students could complete clerkship and post-clerkship rotations.

The group “Write Climate” has sponsored a climate change awareness exhibit displayed during Earth Week in Clark Hall. Write Climate is a group of University students who meet to advocate for the fundamentals of climate-related science and policy awareness through art.

Both Charlottesville-Albemarle Rescue Squad and the Seminole Trail Volunteer Fire Department serve the greater Charlottesville area through volunteer Emergency Medical Technicians and Firefighters. Many of these volunteers who undergo training to provide immediate medical care in emergencies are students at the University.

The Fifth Annual Hack.UVA event this weekend drew more than 620 participants from more than 25 sponsoring or partner groups. Hack.UVA is a hackathon, an event in which a large number of programmers collaboratively work to complete a unique project in a short period of time.

Numerous changes in healthcare policy have been enacted at the University’s Student Health Center over the past two years, including in the areas of transgender patient care, head injuries and concussions, travel medicine and care for sexually transmitted infections. Additionally, new physicians, nurse practitioners and a Care Manager have been appointed.

While fall and spring semester classes form the core of the academic year at the University, January Term classes allow students to take a wide range of courses for credit during the final two weeks of winter break. Many of the programs of study are taught abroad. J-Term public health class PHS 2810/5810, “Disaster Preparedness in St. Kitts and Nevis,” was held in a dual-island nation situated between the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea.
