Make no doubt about it. LaMont Jordan is the staple of the Maryland offense. He is the Terrapins' all-time rusher and all-purpose yardage leader. He is the second-leading active rusher in the NCAA and a unanimous preseason first-team All-American selection. But Jordan has run into a brick wall as of late.

Last weekend, Brigham Young suffered a 29-3 defeat in Jacksonville at the hands of defending national champs Florida State. Tomorrow BYU makes the trek back to the East Coast to take on Virginia at 3:30 p.m. in the dedication game of the expanded Scott Stadium.

After being rained out at home against Virginia Commonwealth Tuesday, the Virginia baseball team gets back into action this weekend with a three-game series against Wake Forest. The Cavaliers kick off the critical midseason ACC matchups today at 3 p.m. at U.Va. Baseball Field. The Cavs and Deacons also face off Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.

Coming off a 1998-99 campaign that saw them finish four games under .500 and eighth in the ACC, the Florida State men's basketball team hopes to rebound this year under third-year Coach Steve Robinson. But the Seminoles face a daunting task if they hope to improve upon last year's mark; they are up against the usual rigors of ACC and early season non-Conference foes that include the likes of Temple, Florida and Auburn.

The future of Florida State star wide receiver and Heisman hopeful Peter Warrick, who recently was charged with shoplifting, remains uncertain. But one thing that is almost certain, however, is that Warrick probably will not suit up for Saturday's "Battle of the Bowdens" when the Seminoles play at Clemson.
