The University is well known for its wide array of a capella groups, so much so that it has become a cultural landmark for the community. Through a cappella groups, student musicians are capable of generating awe-inspiring, memorable performances — a significant part of the University experience that inspired The Cavalier Daily to profile a long-standing group — Hoos in Treble.

Netflix recently released its highly anticipated Kanye West docuseries titled “Jeen-Yuhs: A Kanye Trilogy '' from filmmaking duo Coodie Simmons and Chike Ozah. Over the course of three episodes, the series explores West’s journey from producer to rapper, the creation of his debut album, and his relationship with Coodie — who grew apart from Kanye in the mid-2000s until their reunion in 2017.

Every day, new artists burgeon onto the industry scene, skyrocketing to fame through various social media platforms, Tik Tok being the most prominent. Some new faces in the music industry are coming from halfway across the world, including the likes of Benee and the Kid Laroi. Some artists, though, begin their musical careers right here at the University.

Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” is the latest theatrical rendition of the popular DC Comics superhero. The long-running franchise has seen various actors portray Batman/Bruce Wayne — Robert Pattinson is the latest actor to take on the role. In his adaptation, Reeves brought back classic characters such as Jim Gordon, Catwoman, The Penguin and the main antagonist of the film, The Riddler.

Prime Video’s new docuseries “Phat Tuesdays” features interviews with living legends like Dave Chapelle, Snoop Dogg and Anthony Anderson. Through these interviews and old footage, the three-part series highlights the history of a weekly all-Black comedy show at the famous Los Angeles comedy club The Comedy Store called Phat Tuesdays.

For the last decade, the Weeknd has been one of the most popular and influential artists of the moment. Even as his music has evolved, the Weeknd has been able to maintain the attention of millions of music listeners — especially his hardcore fans. Most recently, the Weeknd has hooked listeners once again by dropping “Dawn FM,” a concept album — the listener of the album is in a purgatorial state, and “Dawn FM” is the music that is playing while there.

Adele released her newest album, “30” Nov. 19. This release is the first full album audiences have heard from Adele since her 2015 album “25.” After debuting in 2008 with “19,” Adele has established herself as an internationally recognized musical superstar, selling over 100 million albums worldwide and winning 15 Grammys.

To cap off summer 2021, Drake has released his highly anticipated album "Certified Lover Boy." Rumors have been circulating since early 2019 about the release and Drake, himself, has teased the album since early 2020, leading him to post a teaser trailer for the album in October 2020. The trailer features references to Drake’s previous albums and mixtapes while announcing a release date of January 2021.

Visionary musician Kanye West released his 10th studio album Aug. 29. This follows up his 2019 release “Jesus is King” — which saw West take a very drastic shift in his artistic direction as he went from primarily secular music to religious music. “Jesus is King” also came on the heels of yet another drastic shift seen with West in 2016 and 2018 as he expressed his support of former President Donald Trump.

To celebrate the beginning of the new school year, the University Programs Council hosted its welcome week festivities. From Aug. 18 to Aug. 28, UPC held a variety of events to welcome students back for the school year, including a movie night, kite festival and a performance by rapper Jack Harlow.

Life is feeling like it is getting back to normal, including the important events in our lives that had to be completed online last year but can now occur in-person this year — college graduations included.

Awards season is currently in full swing. Since many films shifted their release schedules because of the COVID-19 pandemic, this year's award season is longer than usual. Due to these changes, award shows have opened their criteria for film submissions to include streaming services, such as Netflix and Hulu, meaning that Hulu's new release, “The United States vs. Billie Holiday,” will be eligible for nominations.

Just in time for Valentine’s Day, a new love story is here for audiences to see. “Malcolm & Marie,'' a romance film recently released in theaters and on Netflix, was directed and written by “Euphoria” creator Sam Levinson. It stars John David Washington as Malcolm Elliot — a narcissistic, emotionally abusive film director — and Zendaya as Marie Jones — Malcolm’s supportive, veracious girlfriend.

“Saturday Night Live” has spent its last few years in a rating and critical uptick because of its commentary on the American political environment. It received praise for Alec Baldwin’s portrayal of President Donald Trump, which he won an Emmy for in 2017. When SNL announced comedian Dave Chappelle as its host for the post-Election Day show, expectations were high.

Even though the Virginia Film Festival shifted to a primarily virtual format this year, the quality of the films was not affected. One of the films included in the online festival was “The Art of Statecraft: The Bush 41 Team.” The documentary focuses on international policy during the presidency of George H.W. Bush, mostly focused on the years 1989 to 1993 but with flashbacks to preceding events. The film pairs this footage with interviews from scholars and members of the administration from today to reflect upon the decisions of the Bush administration.

On August 7th, Portland-based rapper Aminé released his sophomore studio album “Limbo.” It follows his debut album “Good for You,” released in 2017, which featured favorites like “Caroline,” “Spice Girl” and "Heebiejeebies" with Kehlani. After a quiet 2019 with no new music, he came into 2020 with a bang — releasing ”Shimmy,” the first single off “Limbo,” in February.
