When coach Bronco Mendenhall took over the Virginia football program, he knew there was much to be done before the Cavaliers’ opening game in August. In March, Mendenhall maintained that after initial work and analysis of his new players, he thought they needed “instant accountability and immediate discipline,” making those two of the center pillars of his new program.

The other day I was cleaning out my filing cabinet hidden in the depths of my closet. At the back of one drawer, there was a single piece of printer paper, scrawled all over in colored pencil. I smiled as I looked at a copy of “The Schoolhouse Weekly,” the first publication I had the honor to be a part of. This edition was circa approximately 2003. My name was written near the top, in bright yellow, next to the title "editor-in-chief."

When you ask any athlete their favorite memory on the court, their thoughts probably go straight to the biggest success of their career. For senior tennis player Ryan Shane, his immediate answer was the NCAA national championship. However, he had to think a moment to decide between the two championship trophies he has helped bring home for the Virginia men’s tennis program over his four years here.

At the end of last year’s football season, many people looked at the Virginia program with disappointment. Across the country in Provo, Utah, Bronco Mendenhall looked at it as something quite different — a challenge. Now the head coach of the Virginia football program, Mendenhall wants to bring new opportunities to his young players and hope to the program’s disheartened fanbase.

Of the 29 Cavaliers who were part of the first national championship program in Virginia baseball history, only 18 are returning for the 2016 season. Joining them will be 17 rookie players. With six star players from his program departing for the major leagues following their big win in Omaha, coach Brian O’Connor said that “year in and year out, you are relying on first-year players to make an impact, because we just lose so many players after three years to professional baseball.”

Despite the departure of Joe McCarthy from the Virginia baseball program after being drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays in June, there will still be a player from Scranton, Pa. donning number 31 in the Davenport dugout this season. Freshman Jake McCarthy has enjoyed his first semester at the University, saying that “it is a lot… busier and obviously more competitive than high school... [but] I think I have been acclimating pretty well. ...I am really enjoying it so far.”

When senior defender Emily Sonnett and senior forward Makenzy Doniak walked into the interview room, they were laughing hysterically, joking with one another. Following introductions, they immediately plunked themselves down into two large armchairs. After getting comfortable, Doniak looked at the camera and said, “Is this it? Are we doing this? Oh wow, OK.”

Fear always arises following the departure of star players and it was no exception with guard Joe Harris and forward Akil Mitchell after the 2014 season. Both ended up on NBA rosters — Harris to the Cleveland Cavaliers with the 33rd pick in the draft and Mitchell signing and playing with the Houston Rockets in the D-League soon after.

Being a student athlete is not an easy task. When you are a part of a NCAA Division I men’s basketball program, especially one that was recently ranked 6th in the nation in the USA Today’s preseason coach’s poll, the stress only worsens. The Virginia men’s basketball team faces high expectations from others, national attention and scrutiny and potential NBA careers resting upon their performances.

When asked to describe his first season with the Virginia baseball program in only one word, sophomore first baseman Pavin Smith didn’t need to think before answering: “Unbelievable,” he said. Sophomore second baseman Ernie Clement looked up when asked, responding without hesitation — and with a cheeky smile on his face — “champions.”

Of the players who departed from the 2014 football roster, both defensive end Max Valles and outside linebacker Eli Harold were selected in the NFL Draft. Wide receiver Darius Jennings, linebacker Henry Coley and safety Anthony Harris also signed with professional teams following the draft.
