A third COVID-19 vaccine manufactured by Johnson & Johnson’s pharmaceutical arm Janssen was approved for emergency use by the Food and Drug Administration Feb. 27. The Blue Ridge Health District, which includes Charlottesville and Albemarle County, began administering the new vaccine to individuals 65 and older March 5.

The Innocence Project at the U.Va. School of Law has worked with law students, attorneys and other Innocence Projects across the U.S. since 2008 to exonerate wrongfully convicted Virginians. Since 2019, the Innocence Project at the U.Va. School of Law has also worked to enact policy changes to better protect against wrongful convictions.

The University Judiciary Committee introduced the University and Fraternity Panel at their general body meeting Sunday. The primary responsibility of the panel will be to adjudicate in situations where both a CIO — or other University-sponsored organization — and an Inter-Fraternity Council affiliated fraternity are alleged to have violated one or more standards of conduct at a joint event or activity.

The Indian Student Association hosted their largest annual advocacy event — Chit Chaat — Wednesday evening in Nau Hall with guest speaker Gautam Raghavan. Chit Chaat aims to highlight topics in the South Asian community that aren’t prominently discussed, such as entering political careers.

The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine — a national nonprofit with more than 12,000 doctors — filed a federal complaint last week against the University for their use of live animals in general surgery resident training.

The University’s Board of Visitors voted to implement a new sustainability proposal at their full Board meeting Friday, which outlined strategies and initiatives to achieve sustainability goals throughout the 2020-2030 timeframe of President Jim Ryan’s 10-year strategic plan. The new plan was put forth by the University’s Committee on Sustainability co-chairs — University Facilities Management Director Cheryl Gomez and School of Architecture Professor Phoebe Crisman.

The Virginia State Parole Board voted Monday to release two former University students who were convicted of murder in 1985 to immigration authorities. Elizabeth Haysom and Jens Soering — who met at the University in the mid 1980s — will be deported by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to Canada and Germany, respectively.

At the end of the 2019 fiscal year this past June, the University posted their endowment value at $9.6 billion — a figure that has grown about 1 percent since its $9.5 billion evaluation at the end of the 2018 fiscal year. Despite slower growth in the last year, the University consistently places in the top five of highest endowed public universities — ranking third in 2016 behind the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and Texas A&M University at College Station according to Business Insider.

Democrats flipped both chambers of the Virginia General Assembly and swept the local races in the 2019 General Election Tuesday. All 140 seats of the General Assembly were up for reelection, as well as three out of the five Charlottesville City Council seats.

Take Back the Night, a month-long campaign focused on sexual assault awareness and prevention, concluded Thursday with the Day of Healing event held on the Lawn. The event aimed to educate and provide resources to students and University community members regarding healthy self-care methods and practices. The event featured multiple interactive tables facilitated by TBTN and other organizations on Grounds for students to engage with, as well as a Purvelo cycling class being offered in the evening for students to release stress and tension while practicing self-care. Organizations in attendance included the Women’s Center, Unsung People, Flux, University Records, One Less, HOPE, Peer Health Educators and Ashtanga Yoga.

The Latinx Student Alliance and Latinx Leadership Council kicked off the first ever Latinx Alumni Weekend last Friday by commemorating the launch of a historical website, which documents the development of Hispanic and Latinx student groups at the University. The website provides a directory that contains links to an explanation of each organization’s mission, history and work on Grounds. Natalia Heguaburo, a fourth-year College student and LSA historian, led the project and said it will act as “a living repository” to serve generations of students with a more accurate and representative history.

At the University, the five member Native American Student Union has taken on the difficult task of representing their ethnic group and addressing cultural appropriation that has taken place at both the state level and within the University community in the past couple of weeks.
