The temperature has finally fallen below an average of 80 degrees in Charlottesville, and I could not be happier. Not only does it mean my abysmal window air conditioning unit can stop puffing out lukewarm air as I sleep, but perhaps autumn is right around the corner — or it may already be here. The leaves changing, the sweaters being broken out and dusted off, the air turning crisper as the temperature continues to drop all make the season more enjoyable. However, I think the real “reason for the season” is the only beverage that matters in the fall months — apple cider.

This semester has already been off to an interesting start. For those of us on Grounds, we have watched our fellow Virginia universities bite the dust as the sheer will of Dean Groves has kept us afloat.

As the summer comes to a close, University students — myself included — are sure to be feeling the magnetic pull of college life becoming stronger. Although COVID-19 is still a looming concern and the prospects of returning to Grounds remain uncertain, thousands of students plan on returning to Charlottesville for the fall semester. Those moving out of dorms and into new spaces face the challenge of what tools are needed to create an adequately furnished kitchen.

By now, we’ve probably all been there — sitting at our carved-up childhood desk, cradling a cup of coffee while a professor rattles off facts that couldn’t possibly justify being up at the ungodly hour of 9 a.m. through a laptop screen.

With the rest of the semester moved online, spending an extended period away from the University comes with a few downfalls — your friends preventing you from sending that risky text at 3 a.m., not being able to see your favorite Trin bouncer and a sudden lack in human contact. For some of us, the biggest slight of all — aside from missing your daily dose of love from Miss Kathy — is no longer being able to consume our favorite meals from the dining hall.

YouTube is undoubtedly an important part of today’s social media-dependent society, but fairly recently there has been a surge in an unexpected corner of the YouTube catalog — food channels. Such videos serve as a nice 30-minute intermission between the daily intake of TED talks and “The Bachelor” clips. More importantly, food channels also provide the viewer with an easily digestible education on what goes into making their favorite cuisine.

It has been a season of milestones for the Virginia women's lacrosse team. In one game against Johns Hopkins, the program reached 400 wins, only the third to do so in the NCAA, and head coach Julie Myers won her 100th game in Charlottesville. The Cavaliers seek to continue their winning ways on the path toward capturing their third consecutive ACC Championship.

To some, lacrosse is a game of speed, agility and finesse. Others know it as a hard-fought and physical contest, much like football. While a number of sports feature different rules for indoor and outdoor playing conditions, few sports other than lacrosse are governed by significantly different rules depending on athletes' gender.

It could be argued that the most important factor in making a good team is chemistry. Throughout this season, the No. 4 Virginia women's lacrosse team has been the epitome of team chemistry and unity; regardless of the situation, each player has an encouraging word for a teammate and celebrates others' accomplishments.

Less than nine minutes into the Virginia women's lacrosse team's final regular-season ACC contest Saturday, senior defender and captain Claire Bordley set the tone, scooping up two ground balls and using her stick to cause a turnover -- the first of Virginia's 18 of the day in a 12-4 win against Boston College. With the victory, Virginia clinched a top-two finish in the ACC, guaranteeing the team a bye in the ACC Tournament and a share of the regular season conference title.

"The next couple of days we need to rough our kids up and get them ready for Boston College," Virginia coach Julie Myers said, expressing what seems to be the consensus of the entire women's lacrosse team for this weekend's game. Accolades and honors come through hard work, aspirations and sometimes a little luck. They also bring responsibility and put leadership on that person's shoulders. Quiet and unassuming yet confident and competitive, Virginia women's lacrosse junior midfielder Blair Weymouth has excelled both on the field and as a team leader.
