After reading an article about University Hospital nurses and their emotional journeys during the pandemic, as well as a recent Cavalier Daily article that interviewed University Hospital healthcare workers, two sibling alumni were moved by the difficulties faced by healthcare staff and were inspired to help them. Class of 2017 alumna Kimberly Levinstein and Class of 2014 alumnus Brian Levinstein have been raising funds since early February to provide food and drinks to University Hospital healthcare staffers. They were joined shortly afterwards by Karen Fink, Broadus Wood Elementary School guidance counselor and a family friend of the Levinsteins. Fink decided to join the fundraising initiative after receiving an email sent by Levinsteins to their friends and family about their plan to show gratitude to the University Hospital workers.

Although January term courses — which often have a study-abroad component — were online this year due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, students were still able to interact with the global community. Particularly, students were able to take two new classes which collaborated virtually with community-based organizations in South Africa. Students in the course Community Organizing and Public Health in South Africa joined forces with the Movement for Change and Social Justice in South Africa, and students worked with The Black Power Station while taking Arts Activism, Liberated Spaces and Creative Economies at The Black Power Station.

For the past 40 years, students participating in the University’s Summer Language Institutes would enjoy class time together, learning the beginner and intermediate levels of a foreign language for eight weeks. Students earn 12 credits for eight weeks worth of work in most languages, with the exceptions of Arabic and Chinese for which the beginner and intermediate levels are separated. Simultaneously, students are typically able to spend quality time as a group outside of the classroom, appreciating the culture of the language they are studying, ranging from culinary classes to spending time with native speakers in the Charlottesville area. But this is no normal year.

Qwerty is a recently developed student-to-student note sharing platform that provides those at the University with the ability to anonymously obtain weekly lecture notes, reading notes and study guides from their peers in the same lecture classes. Contributing students have the option to post and monetize their study material for extra cash, and the best part of all — the Honor Committee and many professors are mostly on-board.
