Utterly incomplete without a lanyard and seeking companionship from anyone with two eyes, first-years are unabashedly naive — clueless, even — of what the four years they embark upon have in store.

Del. Eileen Filler-Corn, D-Fairfax, proposed House Bill 1343 Dec. 1 which, if passed, would require university campus police or local law enforcement to report sexual assault cases to their local commonwealth attorneys within 48 hours of notice of the incident.

In the aftermath of the disappearance and death of second-year College student Hannah Graham, University students, Charlottesville citizens and city officials have found themselves increasingly concerned with personal safety. The city has responded with new awareness measures, also moving to foster discussion about new safety initiatives which can work to address community concerns — particularly on the Downtown Mall, where Graham was last seen alive.

A grand jury in St. Louis decided Nov. 24 not to indict former Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson with criminal charges for the fatal shooting of Michael Brown, an 18-year-old African American. The decision sparked an outcry against racial discrimination and police brutality throughout the United States, including at the University and in the Charlottesville community.

The article detailed the alleged gang rape of a then-first-year student by several members of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity in Sept. 2012.
