This weekend, my family drove down to Charlottesville for the day and they ended up arriving at the perfect time for brunch. It was my task to scour Yelp to find a great brunch spot and decided to visit The Nook at the Downtown Mall, persuaded by the classic breakfast options on the menu. Ultimately, I found that The Nook offered a satisfying dining experience with a comforting fall touch. It’s the perfect spot to indulge in a long-lasting brunch with family and friends — complete with good food, lively conversation and a homey ambiance.

This vegetarian chili recipe is a great option for any college student tackling a particularly chaotic schedule this semester. Personally, during the week, my days tend to be busy — filled with classes, homework, extracurriculars and the occasional nap — and in the evening, I return to my apartment starving. It’s rare, however, that I muster up the energy to cook an elaborate, delicious dinner.

Like many people, I am a fall fanatic. I practically wait all year for the chilly days, changing leaves and — most importantly — the onslaught of pumpkin and apple-flavored snacks, desserts and drinks. Although it’s hard to pick a favorite fall item, apple cider donuts rank high on my list. Baking apple cider muffins, however, are the perfect way to spend a cool, fall evening with friends. Similar to the donut versions, they encapsulate all the best parts of the fall season — notes of cinnamon and apple essence evoke the coziness and comfort I associate with this time of the year.

With the end of the school year comes summer festivities and emotional farewells to fourth-years. Therefore, to celebrate the season, it’s time to find that perfect, crowd-pleasing dessert that you can quickly whip up and share with your fellow hard working University students, graduates, friends and family — nothing too time-consuming, too complex or too messy to serve. After modifying a traditional tres leches cake recipe, I’ve crafted the ideal treat for these end-of-the-year occasions — tres leches cupcakes.

When I heard about SK Coffee & Co opening up on the Corner from one of my friends, replacing Pie Guy Coffee, I instantly knew I needed to try it out. Especially since this semester, I have prioritized branching out beyond Starbucks and exploring all of the relatively close Charlottesville coffee spots. Ultimately, I found that SK offers a superb cup of coffee — specifically a vanilla latte — and great ambiance, perfect for coffee-shop studying sessions.

With the spring season upon us, bringing warmer temperatures and sunnier days, I have been craving all things lemon. Personally, I associate the vibrant, citrus fruit with blooming flowers, a fresh springtime scent and beautiful weather, and after scrolling through TikTok, I came across a lemon-centered recipe I knew I needed to try out.

Whenever I go home, I’m always spoiled with a plethora of delicious Indian dishes, and inevitably, I head back to Charlottesville dreading the return to repetitive, boring food from my go-to Corner spots. Over spring break, however, my mom made one of my favorite Indian snacks, bhel puri, and I realized that her recipe was simple with fairly accessible ingredients, making it perfect for anyone’s chaotic college schedule.

Like a lot of University students, I classify bagels as my sixth food group. Whether it’s a freshly-made everything bagel from Bodo’s Bagels or a pumpkin bagel from the bread aisle at Trader Joe’s, I probably eat one each day. Although I will always swear by the classic cinnamon raisin and strawberry cream cheese combination, I love branching out with bagel flavors, spreads and toppings. In fact, I just tried cream cheese and lox on an everything bagel from Bodo’s, and it was life-changing.

I am a huge snacker. Salty, sweet, crunchy and smooth — you name it. With the school year picking up and exams seemingly becoming a weekly occurrence, snacks are even more crucial. Prior to my next round of midterms, I needed to solidify my selection, and since I — like a large portion of University students — am highly obsessed with Trader Joe’s, I decided to compare name brand snacks with Trader Joe’s versions to ultimately determine the best option.

I have been growing tired of my usual breakfast rotation. My early classes force me to stick to effortless morning meals, but there’s only so much yogurt and cereal a person can take. Thankfully, TikTok — somehow sensing my breakfast dilemma — recently presented a great option — overnight oats. Different recipes monopolized my For-You page on TikTok, so I took the hint and tried them out.

Fall is truly the best season of the year. The red and orange leaves transform the scenery on Grounds, the crisp, refreshing air contrasts with the heat and humidity of previous months and the cool breeze means my wardrobe consists solely of sweatshirts. Throughout last week, the early morning chilliness boosted my mood, as I knew that meant fall is quickly approaching. In other words, it’s finally time to break out the pumpkin recipes.

During my first Trader Joe’s run of the school year, I haphazardly tossed various vegetables, fruits and snacks into my cart, not realizing the importance of preparing my weekday menu in advance. I was accustomed to dining hall dinners and severely underestimated the planning needed to cook appetizing, cost-effective meals seven days a week. After looking through my fridge and freezer for a few minutes — stumped about what to cook — my eyes landed on my saving grace — a container of homemade sun-dried tomato pesto, prepared two weeks earlier. Since the pesto can be stored in the freezer for around a month and thawed out later, it looked as though I just made it.

With the summertime heat comes the craving for a sweet, cold dessert to cool you down after a blistering day of sunshine. While the conventional flavors, such as vanilla and chocolate, never disappoint, summer 2022 presents the perfect opportunity to venture outside of your comfort zone. Kulfi — synonymous to “Indian ice cream” — packages classic Indian spices into a refreshing, creamy treat, making it the perfect dessert to savor in the sun.

With heightened stress from impending finals, we all need a break. My suggestion — step away from composition notebooks, caffeine and Clemons Library for a few hours, and swing by Kilwins. Especially if you’re a sugar-crazed student like me, this ice cream and chocolate shop is guaranteed to sweeten your finals season.

In my mind, breakfast achieves superiority among all other meals. Not only does it provide energy throughout tiring days and lengthy lectures, a solid breakfast also brightens any gloomy morning. After all, being hangry is a real thing, especially while operating on only a few hours of sleep. This semester, thanks to my early classes, I discovered various breakfast spots open by 9 a.m. on Grounds. After exploring these options, I have compiled a list, in no particular order, of the best breakfast meals to help prevent your “hanger” from taking over.
