Curry School of Education and Human Development Dean Robert Pianta announced earlier this month that an Ad Hoc Committee on Naming will begin studying potential changes to the school’s name and one of its academic buildings, Ruffner Hall. Both Curry and Ruffner were defenders of slavery, calling into question the use of their names for academic schools and buildings.

The University Board of Elections announced the results of First Year Council elections Sunday, naming first-year College students Denzel Mitchell and Jennifer Lin as president and vice president, respectively. Facilities Management installed additional signage outside of libraries this week in order to draw attention to the University’s prohibition on smoking and vaping inside buildings on Grounds. The installation of signs comes partially in response to the rising popularity of JUULs, a type of vapor-based e-cigarette containing nicotine widely-used by college students.

The Inter-Sorority Council released a list of suggestions Tuesday regarding the fraternity Sigma Chi’s annual philanthropy event, Derby Days, including a greater focus on charitable activities, expanding the event beyond ISC sororities and changes to certain competition rules. The week-long fundraiser has attracted controversy in the past for its reliance on sorority competition and potential objectification of female participants.

Slaughter Recreation Center is set to undergo renovations starting March 26 in order to make room for an upcoming relocation of the Outdoor Recreation Center. Slaughter will house expanded climbing and rental centers as part of the new ORC, as well as a functional training facility.
