Five third-year students recently began living in The Perkins House, a new initiative associated with Theological Horizons and supported by the John and Vera Mae Perkins Foundation. The goal of the initiative is for the students to strengthen their connections with the Charlottesville community. The house resides in the 10th and Page neighborhood and is named after minister and civil rights activist John M. Perkins.

In the wake of the Aug. 11 white nationalist torchlit march on Grounds and the Aug. 12 “Unite the Right” rally, the University has hired an outside security firm to evaluate safety at the University. The University has also established a working group to assess the University’s response to the recent events.

Ben Cullop, an Albemarle resident and University alumnus, announced his candidacy for Virginia’s Fifth District Congressional seat last week. Cullop filed the necessary paperwork to run in July, but only recently made the formal announcement of his candidacy.

The City will be implementing a program to put parking meters at all on-street parking spaces around the Downtown Mall. The parking meters are part of a pilot program City Council approved during a meeting in July.

Charlottesville residents filled the City Council meeting Monday night to voice their concerns about how the city handled the recent Ku Klux Klan rally and to discuss the upcoming Unite the Right rally in Emancipation Park. Residents filled the chambers, with some people having to stand in the back of the room.

The U.Va. Foundation announced last week that Kevin J. Fay, a 1977 University graduate and former Board of Visitors member, would be the new chair of the foundation's Board of Directors, effective July 1. Fay was designated by Board of Visitors Rector Frank Conner.

The Loyal White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan held a rally in Justice Park Saturday afternoon to protest the removal of Confederate monuments in Charlottesville. However, they were faced with an estimated 1,000 counter protesters in the park, 22 of whom were arrested.

The University’s Center for Politics hosted their 19th annual Virginia Political History Project. This year’s theme was “Happy 100th Birthday JFK.” About 160 kids from the local YMCA and Boys and Girls Clubs attended the event.
