When a murder scandal rattles a small mining town in 1960s rural Missouri, the lives of the seemingly ordinary residents of the sleepy community begin to unravel. Taking place in the middle of a murder trial, “The Rimers of Eldritch” is about much more than a simple — albeit gruesome — crime. The drama department production attempts to capture not only the tension caused by an untimely death in a small community, but also the unanticipated ability of one death to expose people’s true nature.

A thrilling novel-to-movie adaptation reminiscent of literary staples “Lord of the Flies” and “Peter Pan,” “The Maze Runner” is more than just another installment in the mediocre young adult dystopian franchise. Apart from a rather forced ending, a mastery of cinematic tension and a solid cast makes the movie an all-around crowd-pleaser.

Showtime's provocative period drama “Masters of Sex” continues to follow the story of real-life sex researchers Bill Masters (played by the charismatic Michael Sheen) and Virginia Johnson (Lizzy Caplan). The show, now in its second season, affords these characters with less nudity and more character development than previous episodes allowed.

After nearly two decades of worldwide popularity, Lois Lowry’s young adult dystopian novel “The Giver” has finally received a big-screen adaptation. Since its publication in 1993, the book’s dedicated fanbase has contested any transition off the page. Members of the novel’s original audience, then, may take issue to significant plot and character alterations — though the finished product works fine as a standalone film.
