Last year, despite a dominant regular season which culminated in a second straight ACC regular season championship, Virginia still had its share of skeptics going into the NCAA Tournament. Many had concerns about whether Virginia’s notoriously slow pace of play would work in the postseason — criticisms which became more prevalent after Virginia’s historic upset loss in the first round of the 2018 NCAA Tournament. However, the Cavaliers went on to silence the doubters and win the first national championship in program history, proving that their playing style can be effective in March.

The Washington Nationals defeated the Houston Astros 6-2 in a decisive Game Seven of the World Series Wednesday night, marking the franchise’s first-ever championship. The series was the first World Series appearance for infielder Ryan Zimmerman and relief pitcher Sean Doolittle, two of the Nationals’ key players. Before they were Nationals teammates, Zimmerman and Doolittle played together at Virginia during the 2005 season, teaming up to lead the Cavaliers to their fifth NCAA tournament appearance in school history. In recognition of the two former MLB All-Stars securing baseball’s biggest prize, we looked back at the collegiate years of the duo that helped define Virginia baseball for years to come.

The No. 7 Virginia men’s basketball team has picked up right where the 2019 national champions left off, starting the season with three convincing victories over Syracuse, James Madison and Columbia. However, this basketball season has also come with significant changes. The first — and most obvious — change is in who is playing. The Cavaliers no longer have star players De’Andre Hunter, Ty Jerome and Kyle Guy on the roster. But there is another big change, which might not be as clear — the three-point line.

When Virginia football Coach Bronco Mendenhall took the reins of the team in 2016, he inherited a struggling program that had finished with a losing record in each of the last four seasons. After former Virginia Coach George Welsh’s retirement in 2000, the program struggled to maintain its reputation, and for a decade, the football team was the black sheep of the University’s otherwise outstanding athletic program.
