The University is planning to release a sexual assault campus climate survey this April in collaboration with the Association of American Universities — a survey which will be distributed among 27 nationwide institutions of higher education.

The recently released Rolling Stone article portraying a graphic gang rape of a then-first-year student by seven men at a fraternity party has produced a wave of reactions among the University's alumni. Many have been motivated to take action and demand the University administration — portrayed in the article as failing to address survivors' needs or pursue justice against perpetrators of sexual violence — immediately do the same.

A Texas nurse has been infected with Ebola on American soil, after treating a Liberian man who died from the virus in Dallas Oct. 8. As the Center for Disease Control and other governmental agencies work to combat the spread of the outbreak, the Virginia Department of Health and the University Medical Center have become involved in preparing ways to prevent a potential domestic outbreaks.

The Virginia State Police recently implemented a new policing tactic to combat texting while driving. In District VI, which covers the Salem and Roanoke area, police officers have begun taking pictures of drivers in the act of texting, using these photographs as evidence to pull over and fine perpetrators.
