Some of the best shows on television are political dramas and comedies. With the 2016 presidential election heating up, shows currently on the air have plenty of material to glean from ongoing real-life antics. Political television dramas use their artistic medium to tackle many issues that have been hotly debated in real life, such as gay marriage, civil rights, sexual assault and corruption. Political comedies poke fun at much of the ridiculousness of the political landscape, whether it is an outrageous personality or policy, which can help shape the way we think about politics. Here are some of the best political television shows, from dramas to comedies.

Rihanna’s long (anti)cipated eighth studio album, “Anti,” was finally released this past week. MTV’s latest show, “The Shannara Chronicles” is a high-fantasy epic much like “Lord of the Rings,” only worse, much worse. Sadly for the network — which seems to be creating more and more content that isn’t related to “Music Television” at all — “Shannara” fails as a fantasy story capable of captivating audiences. There simply isn’t anything special about the show. The premise: A young heroine and her sidekicks with magical powers are tasked with the job of saving the world because, for some strange reason, a supernatural force is calling them into action. Sound familiar? This bland plot line isn’t even worthy of being called a watered down “Game of Thrones.”

Every once in awhile, the rap industry blesses us with a new collaboration or compilation album. There is something incredibly enticing about having prominent artists come together, mixing their sounds and influences and sometimes bringing together fanbases that wouldn’t normally converge. The latest rap collaboration album to hit music libraries is “What a Time to Be Alive” by superstar rappers Drake and Future. The album is truly a highlight of the two young rappers’ careers, and the braggadocious audacity of their styles manifests itself magnificently on the album.

At this year’s MTV Video Music Awards ceremony, Miley Cyrus shocked viewers around the world when she concluded her hosting stint by announcing her fifth studio album. This past weekend’s 32nd annual VMAs, hosted by Miley Cyrus, were quite the spectacle. In a word, the show was crude, simply put. No one should be surprised, because of Miley’s attention-grabbing, unapologetic personality. Cyrus has been notoriously known for her topless instagram photos, which have becomerather standard. With her tongue wagging in defiance, she is quite vocal about her blatant appreciation of popular drugs marijuana and “molly.”

After months of leaks and demos surfacing online, Madonna has finally released her long-awaited 13th studio album, “Rebel Heart.” Despite the controversy leading to its release, the album isn’t as bad as one might expect — somehow, Madonna’s music has found a way to transcend all the controversy surrounding her career. The songs on this album are a representation of Madonna, as opposed to nostalgia for another “musical era”.

It is rare to find a primetime television show with as much social relevance and gripping drama as “Empire.” A show in its own league, its first season has already broken records and is a bonafide hit. “Empire” is the only primetime show to increase in viewers over the first five episodes in over 20 years. Beyond that, every single episode since the pilot has seen an increase in viewership overall. The show has undoubtedly amassed a tremendous following, and with good reason, too.

If you thought denim was done, you thought wrong. The famed material certainly peaked during the mid-90s and early 2000s, but it only left us for a short time before returning with a vengeance. Denim, the heralded textile of jeans and overalls, jackets and shirts, is a staple in our society. While wearing denim on top of denim was, until recently, taboo, it seems that the tides are changing.

Big Sean’s latest studio album comes at a pivotal point in the rap music industry. Drake recently surprise released an album and Kendrick Lamar is making waves with new music, while newcomers like Rae Sremmurd and O.T. Genasais are making their way onto the scene. As of this year, there have not been many big rap releases, which means that Big Sean had a massive listening public waiting on pins and needles for this release. The rapper had to be on his A-game with this album. Happily, he did not disappoint.

From the start of its lackluster publicity pushes, “Jupiter Ascending” failed to live up to its promise to be one of the biggest sci-fi blockbusters of the year. Instead, the movie turned out to be a failed attempt at creating a sci-fi universe, with a plot so thin and disjointed that it could only be poorly masked by its obtuse script. The saving grace of the film comes only from the eye-candy that is Mila Kunis, Channing Tatum and Eddie Redmayne.

This year’s Grammys were, as always, filled with many shock value moments. From Iggy Azalea’s highly scrutinized braid, to Beyoncé’s ethereal performance, to Kanye West almost “pulling a Kanye,” the music award show was as much a reality spectacle as it was a ceremony.

The pop music industry is tough to crack into — requiring the right timing, the right voice and the right song. Breaking into the business, Meghan Trainor saw success in 2014 with her number one single “All About That Bass.” Sadly, Trainor’s debut studio album, “Title,” is both lackluster and dull, with tracks that never quite coalesce and sound rather formulaic.

A new year marks a fresh start for moviegoers — audiences wait to see which movies will be smash hits and which will be utter flops.
