No. 2 Virginia men’s lacrosse saw their 2023 campaign come to a close Saturday in heartbreaking fashion after an overtime game winner from No. 3 Notre Dame. It was an incredibly close game throughout, with neither team able to garner more than a two-goal lead, but in their third matchup of the season, it was the Fighting Irish (13-2, 4-2 ACC) who came out on top, defeating the Cavaliers (13-4, 4-2 ACC) 13-12 in overtime.

No. 2 Virginia men’s lacrosse opened their postseason run with an emphatic 17-8 victory over Richmond. A lightning delay in between the first and second quarters, as well as rainy conditions throughout, did little to slow down the Cavalier (12-3, 4-2 ACC) offense, as they ran away from the Spiders (11-5, 4-1 Atlantic Ten) with ease.

No. 4 Virginia men’s lacrosse bounced back from their loss last week to defeat No. 12 Syracuse by a score of 19-12. The Cavaliers (9-3, 3-2 ACC) started off hot and the Orange (8-6, 1-4 ACC) were never able to catch up. With the win, Virginia extended their streak of wins after a loss to 19 games.

The No. 3 Virginia men’s lacrosse team won its third road game of the season when they defeated No. 10 North Carolina Friday by a score of 19-12. The Cavaliers (8-2, 2-1 ACC) earned their fifth straight victory over the Tar Heels (7-4, 1-2 ACC).

In rainy weather Friday evening in Klöckner Stadium, No. 4 Duke men’s lacrosse took an early lead and maintained it the entire way en route to a 16-14 victory over No. 1 Virginia. The Cavaliers (7-2, 1-1 ACC) came into this game hoping to break a regular-season losing streak to the Blue Devils (10-1, 3-0 ACC) but failed to stop a stretch that now stands at 17 games.

Saturday’s matchup between No. 1 Virginia (6-1, 0-0 ACC) and No. 3 Maryland (5-2, 0-0 Big Ten) certainly lived up to the hype. In front of a raucous crowd of 5,745 — the Cavaliers’ largest home crowd for a lacrosse game since 2013 — Virginia battled back to tie the game late before Maryland junior attacker Daniel Kelly scored from the top of the box in overtime to seal the 13-14 victory for the Terrapins.

No. 1 men’s lacrosse further solidified their case as the best team in the nation with a commanding 25-8 victory over Richmond Saturday in Charlottesville. The Cavaliers (4-0, 0-0 ACC) were looking for revenge from last year’s 17-13 loss to the Spiders (3-2, 0-0 Atlantic 10), their only loss in the series between the two schools. Virginia has now won 12 consecutive games at Klöckner Stadium, and have scored at least 17 goals in all four games so far.

No. 1 Virginia men’s lacrosse scored the first nine goals of the game on their way to defeating No. 18 Harvard by a score of 25-21 Saturday in Charlottesville. Although the Cavaliers (2-0, 0-0 ACC) dominated most of the game, the Crimson (0-1, 0-0 Ivy League) were able to cut into the lead at the end after Virginia’s starters had been pulled from the game. Regardless, the Cavaliers never trailed and were able to take care of the lower-ranked opponent.

In its first-ever matchup with Michigan, No. 1 Virginia was able to defend Klöckner Stadium and extend its home winning streak to ten straight games with a 17-13 victory Saturday. The Cavaliers (1-0, 0-0 ACC) never trailed against a tough Wolverines (0-1, 0-0 Big Ten) squad that refused to go away until the final buzzer.

Last year, Virginia was denied a chance to compete for their third consecutive title after losing in the national quarterfinals to a Maryland team that ranked among the best in the history of college lacrosse. A team on its way to a perfect 18-0 season with a whopping six players drafted into the Premier Lacrosse League that year proved to be a buzzsaw in the Cavaliers’ hopes at a three-peat.

The No. 3 seed Virginia women’s soccer team (16-3-3, 6-2-2 ACC) earned an impressive win on the road against the No. 2 seed Penn State (15-5-3, 5-3-2 Big Ten) Sunday night. After a 3-1 win over Xavier to set up this match, the Nittany Lions served as the first nationally seeded team that the Cavaliers have faced in this tournament, and they certainly pushed Virginia to the brink.

Following its first loss of the season, the No. 2 Virginia women’s soccer team came into its first conference home game of the season searching for a better performance, and Louisville looked to be the perfect opponent for a tune-up game for the Cavaliers (9-1-1, 2-1-0 ACC). Virginia took advantage, as it was able to pull away late for a 2-0 victory Sunday afternoon against the Cardinals (4-3-2, 1-2-0 ACC).

In a tightly contested match, a 54th minute goal from graduate student forward Haley Hopkins proved to be the difference maker in a 1-0 victory for the Cavaliers (3-0, 0-0 ACC) Thursday.

The No. 7 Virginia men’s tennis team (28-5, 12-0 ACC) took down No. 8 Kentucky (26-8, 10-2 SEC) to cap off a stellar tournament run this Sunday, earning its fifth overall national championship — all of which were earned in the past decade. The Cavaliers also defeated No. 2 Florida (26-3, 12-0 SEC) and No. 6 Tennessee (26-8, 8-4 SEC) prior to defeating the Wildcats in the championship match.

The No. 7 Virginia men’s tennis team (25-5, 12-0 ACC) advanced to its 15th quarterfinal in the last 17 NCAA Championships with a 4-0 victory over No. 10 South Carolina (23-7, 10-2 SEC) Friday. The Cavaliers have now won all of their NCAA Championship matches this year with the same score of 4-0 and will play No. 2 Florida (26-2, 12-0 SEC) in the quarterfinal.
