For only the second time in program history, Virginia women’s tennis are ACC Regular Season co-champions thanks to a pair of back-to-back home victories this weekend against No. 19 Miami and No. 23 Florida State. They then took on the Seminoles (15-7, 9-4 ACC) Sunday, closing out the regular season on a victorious 4-2 high note. Virginia will share the regular season title with No. 4 North Carolina, as both teams are 12-1 in conference play.

However, Virginia bounced back quickly Sunday in another top-25 matchup, besting No. 20 Duke, 4-3. The Cavaliers were determined to grind out victory, defeating the Blue Devils (13-7, 6-5 ACC), despite multiple competitive tiebreakers.

The Cavaliers bowed out to No. 13 seed Furman in the opening round a season prior, missed the tournament entirely in 2022 and and fell to No. 13 seed Ohio in the first round in 2021. The program hasn’t won a game in the “Big Dance” since its national title run in 2019, leaving questions surrounding Coach Tony Bennett’s future in Charlottesville.

When Virginia men’s basketball bows out of the postseason, it usually goes out with a bang — elimination at the hands of a 16-seed, on a buzzer beater or in back-to-back overtimes against underdogs. This year, Coach Tony Bennett’s team went out with a whimper. Virginia’s season ended March 19 in Dayton, Ohio as Colorado State charged to a 67-42 win in the First Four of the NCAA Tournament. The Cavaliers continued their run of tournament failure since the 2019 National Championship — having either missed the tournament entirely or gotten eliminated in its first game — for the fourth year in a row.

Already 21 games into the 2024 season, Virginia baseball has racked up a significant sample size of contests to analyze. Having jumped out to a 9-0 start and then continuing to win big games, one might think that the No. 14 Cavaliers (17-4, 3-3 ACC) are in a great spot to make a run for both the ACC Championship and a return trip to Omaha, Neb. for the College Baseball World Series. While that might be the case, Virginia’s pitching woes will make those potential accomplishments a lot harder to come by.

Then, to start off the academic semester, they won eight games in a row, then dropped four of seven, only to close out the regular season with a quality 72-57 win against Georgia Tech. After a close loss to North Carolina saw momentum on the upswing, the Virginia wrestling team hoped to capitalize and secure a win in its final regular season match of the year Friday against Pittsburgh. However, that hopefulness was stunted early on in a 35-7 defeat as the Cavaliers (7-6, 1-4 ACC) were forced to forfeit the opening 125-lbs weight class to the No. 23 Panthers (10-9, 2-3 ACC) due to health injuries that prohibited sophomores Kyle Montaperto and Sammie Hayes from competing. The theme of injuries has been prevalent for Virginia all season, and it held them back from reaching their full potential in this match.
