When looking at a list of Virginia men’s soccer greats, there is no doubt that former striker Daryl Dike ranks high. After leading Virginia men’s soccer to an ACC title and national championship appearance in 2019, the Edmond, Okla. native left Virginia in order to play professionally, forgoing his final two years of college eligibility. Dike’s accolades for the Cavaliers — including being named most outstanding offensive player in the 2019 NCAA tournament — helped him get drafted fifth overall in the 2020 MLS Superdraft by Orlando City SC.

After the unprecedented cancelation of the 2020 NCAA men's basketball tournaments — commonly known as March Madness — due to the COVID-19 pandemic, fans were left with heartbreak. Little by little, millions of sports fans’ hearts have been filled again with the return of nearly every other major sport. That is, besides college basketball, which is slated to officially return Nov. 25. While the details of the Cavaliers’ season opener remain unknown, here are 10 things that all Virginia men's basketball fans should be looking forward to for the 2020-21 season.

Following last week’s Wolfpack Invite, the Virginia men’s and women’s cross country teams returned to Panorama Farms to compete at the Virginia/Panorama Farms Invitational in their third meet of the season. The Cavaliers faced off against Duke and Virginia Tech, with the men’s team placing first once again — its third first-place win of the season — and the women’s team securing second place.

Freshman striker Lilly Hengerer and freshmen midfielder Meghen Hengerer — twins from Bedminster, N.J. — were two of Virginia’s most impressive recruits in its latest freshmen class. They’ve already made their presence known on the team — both have played in all six games so far and Meghen even assisted another teammate in scoring a goal against a defending national champion North Carolina team.

Virginia football traveled to Clemson for its first road game of the season, falling 41-23. The Cavaliers (1-1, 1-1 ACC), showed flashes of promise throughout the game, but the consistency and talent on the Tigers (3-0, 2-0 ACC) proved to be too much.

Like most kids in my hometown, I started out playing sports when I was around four years old. I began with soccer, then dance, then basketball, volleyball, tennis and my most recent addition, golf. Simply put, sports have been a constant in my life, and since the age of four, I have not gone through a single year without being on a team. Of course, that was before coronavirus.

Following a 38-20 victory over ACC Coastal rival Duke, Virginia football gears up for what is conceivably its toughest game of the season against No. 1 Clemson. The Cavaliers (1-0, 1-0 ACC) have dropped four straight contests to the Tigers (2-0, 1-0 ACC) and will certainly have to bring their A-game if they want to topple a Clemson squad that has won two national championships in the last four seasons.

With a storied history and a claim to eight national titles, the Virginia men’s lacrosse program is no stranger to success. In recent years, the Cavaliers have maintained their place as one of the nation’s elite, capturing a championship in 2011 and most recently in 2019. How — in the uber-competitive ACC while also competing against bona-fide programs such as Johns Hopkins and Maryland — have the Cavaliers sustained their dominance year in and year out? The 2019 Virginia field hockey season was a major improvement from the previous year, but one that still ended in heartbreak after a loss in the NCAA semifinals to Princeton. With many top offensive and defensive players returning this year — including three preseason All-ACC team members — the 2020 Cavaliers look prepared to have a strong season in the face of a conference-only schedule. In the preseason ACC poll, the Cavaliers were predicted to finish second behind reigning NCAA champion North Carolina.

Virginia enters the 2020 season with considerable questions — not so much about the team itself, but the entirety of the collegiate soccer landscape. As the ACC intends to play sports this fall, the Cavaliers look to improve upon a disappointing second-round exit from last year’s College Cup. Although the NCAA has postponed the NCAA Tournament until the spring, Virginia looks forward to ACC action and competing for the conference title.

The trio of De’Andre Hunter, Ty Jerome and Kyle Guy were instrumental in Virginia men’s basketball’s unforgettable 2019 NCAA Tournament run, helping the Cavaliers win their first national championship in program history. Following the memorable season, all three players elected to leave Charlottesville early and enter the 2019 NBA Draft. Hunter and Jerome were selected in the first round of the draft with Guy following in the second round, marking the first time Virginia had three players drafted since 1987. With the 2019-20 NBA season coming to a close and all three players’ teams eliminated from contention, it’s a good time to review how Virginia’s “Big Three” fared during their rookie seasons.

Following an off-season dominated by the COVID-19 pandemic, Virginia football looks to improve on a 2019 season that saw the Cavaliers defeat rival Virginia Tech, win the ACC Coastal division and secure an Orange Bowl appearance. However, this year’s Cavalier squad will look noticeably different from the 2019 team, as Virginia loses stalwarts in quarterback Bryce Perkins, wide receivers Joe Reed and Hasise Dubois, linebacker Jordan Mack and cornerback Bryce Hall to graduation. Along with the changes in the personnel, the Cavaliers’ schedule will also look different. Due to the pandemic, Virginia will play a conference-only 10-game slate that includes challenging road games against Virginia Tech, Florida State, Clemson and Miami.

Due to the postponement of the 2020 Summer Olympic Games until next summer, Olympic hopefuls worldwide have had their lives and careers turned upside-down. Both sophomore swimmer Kate Douglass and senior swimmer Paige Madden were looking forward to competing for a spot to represent the United States at the Games this summer, but are now looking to use the extra year to prepare for 2021.

After months of discussion and planning, the ACC Board of Directors announced official plans for all fall sports today. Among other details, the ACC stated that all seven ACC-sponsored fall sports will begin competition the week of Sept. 7.
