Seven games and over 775 minutes — that’s how long junior goalkeeper Laurel Ivory played without conceding a goal before a heroic Boston College shot ended her streak Sunday. In her three years at Virginia, the junior is already fourth all-time in shutouts and fifth all-time in victories. Ivory is impressive not only in her ability to produce clean sheets, but also in the intensity she brings to every match.

Virginia men’s soccer, in the middle of a standout season, is full of talented athletes motivated to win. However, junior midfielder Beau Bradley’s competitive spirit comes from a source different from most of his teammates — his family’s deep-rooted tradition of hard work and athletic dominance. The Bradley family name is synonymous with many celebrated American sports figures including professional baseball players, a professional soccer coach and a captain of the United States men’s national soccer team.

The No. 16 Virginia men’s cross country team traveled to Madison for the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational Friday and finished with a score of 492 points to place 18th overall out of the 36 teams at the meet. No. 1 Northern Arizona took first place with 59 points followed by No. 5 Stanford with 133 points and No. 28 Tulsa with 175 points.

After three weeks of preparation, the Virginia men’s and women’s cross country teams return to action for their fourth meet of the season. The men kick things off Friday afternoon at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational in Madison, Wis., while the women follow Saturday morning at the Under-Armour Pre-National Invitational in Terre Haute, Ind.

No. 1 Virginia men’s soccer extended its winning streak Tuesday night, defeating George Washington 3-0 at Klockner Stadium. The now-No. 1 ranked team in the nation — the current ranking for Virginia women’s soccer as well — has won its first nine games of the season for the first time in Coach George Gelnovatch’s 24-year tenure.

After now-No. 2 Stanford’s draw with UC Santa Barbara Sept. 29, Virginia men’s soccer leapfrogged the Cardinals into the top spot of the United Soccer Coaches’ Poll. The Cavaliers (9-0-0, 3-0-0 ACC) have used an efficient offense and a strong defense to climb up the rankings from No. 12 to No. 1.

Virginia fall sports has started the season strong. Football started 4-0 for the first time since 2005 before falling to No. 10 Notre Dame on the road. Volleyball is off to its best start since 2015. Field hockey is ranked within the top ten in the country. Men’s cross country is ranked.

Between 2014 and 2019, much has changed in the realm of Virginia athletics. Men’s basketball went from winning their first ACC championship in almost five decades to winning a national championship. Football has turned from the doormat of the ACC to an ACC Coastal Division contender. However, for men’s soccer, the winning formula has stayed constant.

The top-25 ACC soccer bout between No. 3 Virginia and No. 21 Notre Dame was moved to 11 a.m. Saturday morning after torrential rain in northern Indiana Friday night. Despite the prolonged stay in South Bend, Ind., the Cavaliers (8-0, 3-0 ACC) defeated the Fighting Irish (4-3-1, 0-3-0 ACC) 1-0 to stay perfect this season.
