As another group of first-year students trickle onto Grounds this semester, members of the University community are doing their part to cultivate a sense of belonging among this new set of Cavaliers. The College Council hosted its second annual block party for first-year COLA students Friday. The event is aimed at helping students feel included among their peers and within the larger University community.

The Honor Committee discussed the creation of proactive guidelines for student Artificial Intelligence usage as well as logistics for hosting a popular assembly with the student body at the meeting Sunday. With 19 out of 27 members present, the Committee met quorum and was able to vote on matters concerning the constitution and bylaws.

Virginia volleyball hosted the Jefferson Cup Invitational Friday and Saturday at Memorial Gymnasium. The Cavaliers (7-3, 0-0 ACC) defeated Norfolk State in a three-set sweep but could not hold on to beat Wofford.

No. 20 Virginia women’s soccer began ACC play against Louisville Saturday night with a 1-1 draw. After a scoreless draw against Iowa last Thursday, the Cavaliers (5-0-3, 0-0-1 ACC) hoped to come back with a strong offensive performance. Meanwhile, the Cardinals (1-4-4, 0-0-1 ACC) hoped for a draw or a win to end their historical defeated streak in all 11 games against Virginia. Ultimately Virginia’s offense sputtered until late in the match, as the teams split points in their first conference game of the season.

On a warm Saturday in a bright, low-ceilinged space beneath the Downtown Mall, a group of local creatives convened for the first-ever Charlottesville Zine Fest. The organization had been building to this event for over a year — connecting artists, consolidating resources, staging workshops — as part of an ongoing mission to strengthen and showcase Charlottesville’s growing network of zine-makers.

Every Thursday evening in the belly of Brooks Hall sits a collection of poets, creatives and arts enthusiasts that make up Flux, the University’s student-led poetry and spoken word organization. The only group of its kind at the University, Flux plays a unique and important role in the community, giving its participants a place to express themselves and a platform to share their work.

With Student Council approving new Contracted Independent Organizations every semester, there are well over 700 CIOs on Grounds. The University has made a commitment to cultivate “a vibrant and unique residential learning environment marked by the free and collegial exchange of ideas” and CIOs are an integral part of this mission. These student organizations are not just fun pastimes or things to put on our resumes — CIOs get students ready for the workplace and foster professional opportunities, inspire change in both University and Charlottesville communities and allow students to express themselves. CIOs are more than extracurriculars — they are an integral part of the University’s mission and they serve as excellent supplements to a liberal arts education.

Looking for its first victory in almost two weeks, Virginia men’s soccer hosted NC State at Klöckner Stadium in an ACC clash Saturday night. With history on the line — Coach George Gelnovatch entered Saturday just one win shy of becoming the first coach in ACC history to win 100 conference games with one school — the Cavaliers (4-2-1, 1-1 ACC) delivered, handling the Wolfpack (4-3, 1-1 ACC) 3-1 to pick up their first ACC win of 2023.

In its first true road game of the season, Virginia football fell apart late in a 42-14 loss to Maryland Friday. The Cavaliers (0-3, 0-0 ACC) shot out to a 14-0 lead, but were not able to find their way into the end zone for the rest of the match. Meanwhile, the Terrapins (3-0, 0-0 Big 10) took advantage of three second-half interceptions to eventually blow the game open in a final score that made the game look less close than it actually was.

The Board of Visitors discussed the Board’s relationship with University president Jim Ryan in the full board leadership meeting Friday. Led by former President of Bowdoin College Clayton S. Rose, the meeting served as a reminder of the Board’s duties, both to the state and the University.

The Board of Visitors’ Finance Committee provided updates on the fiscal year 2024 budget and approved amendments to the 2024-2026 Biennial Budget and the 2023 State Six-Year Institutional Plans for the University and the College at Wise during the meeting Thursday. The Board also discussed improved safety measures on the Corner and tuition rates ahead of the next Board meeting in December.

The Board of Visitors’ Buildings and Grounds Committee approved a new Scott Stadium video scoreboard and heard updates on the renovation of Alderman Library during their meeting Thursday. The Board also approved the naming of two new upper-class residence halls in honor of former professors, as well as the addition of new extensions at Fontaine Research Park.

The Board of Visitors Academic and Student Life Committee discussed changes to undergraduate advising programs, faculty recruitment and research funding opportunities at its meeting Wednesday afternoon. Among the presented advising adjustments was an updated student resource website, new advising software and changes to the School of Engineering’s advising program.
