It's 10:30 p.m. and players skate onto the ice to begin practice at the LaHaye Ice Center, home to the Liberty University Club Hockey teams in Lynchburg. At this hour the ice won’t be carved by any of Liberty’s teams. Instead, this is the Virginia Club Hockey Team taking to the ice for its once weekly practice after an hour of travel down Interstate-29.

On a cold November Sunday at Klöckner Stadium, fourth-seeded Virginia closed out its season with a 1-1 (5-3 penalties) loss to Marshall. The Cavaliers (10-4-5, 5-1-2 ACC), despite registering 20 shots with six of them on goal, were unable to find a winner in regulation time against the Thundering Herd (11-3-4, 4-1-3 Sun Belt). This game was the first for Virginia men’s soccer since the tragic deaths of football players Devin Chandler, D’Sean Perry and Lavel Davis Jr.

Men’s soccer produced a miraculous comeback Friday night against North Carolina to finish ACC play after a 2-2 draw in their final game of the season. The Cavaliers (9-4-3, 5-1-2 ACC) were led by sophomore forward Michael Tsicoulias and junior midfielder Daniel Mangarov who netted the two goals in the second half to bring themselves level with the Tar Heels (7-4-5, 2-2-4 ACC). The result makes the Cavaliers the No. 3 seed in the ACC tournament.

No. 21 Virginia was defeated by No. 10 Denver 1-0 despite registering 13 shots, six of them on goal, Tuesday night at Klöckner Stadium. The Cavaliers (7-4, 3-1 ACC) had two shots that were inches from going into the back of the net, but both were cleared away by the Pioneers (7-2-2, 2-0 SUMMIT), allowing them to secure the shutout. After two straight road wins against ranked ACC opponents, Virginia’s three-game win streak came to an end.

It was a night to remember for freshman forward Andy Sullins, who scored his first collegiate goal with a wonder strike that served as the winning goal to help Virginia defeat American 2-0. The Cavaliers (5-3, 1-1 ACC) demonstrated offensive prowess with 15 shots against the Eagles (2-2-2, 0-1 Patriot League) Tuesday night at Klöckner Stadium. On the defensive side, led by junior goalkeeper Holden Brown, Virginia produced its fourth clean sheet of the season.

Virginia dominated La Salle 5-0 on a clear Tuesday night at Klöckner Stadium. The Cavaliers (4-2-0, 1-0-0 ACC) were led by junior midfielder Axel Ahlander — notching a goal and an assist — against the Explorers (1-2-2) who defended against an overwhelming amount of chances from Virginia. After demonstrating their attacking prowess Friday with a 4-2 win against Virginia Tech, the Cavaliers continued their attacking display, registering 14 shots on goal.

In the fourth edition of the “Battle for the DMV,” Maryland proved to be the stronger side, overpowering Virginia 6-1 Monday night. The Cavaliers (2-2-0, 0-0-0 ACC) faced their toughest test of the season so far and were overwhelmed by the Terrapins’ (2-1-1, 0-0-0 Big Ten) attacking prowess and high press.

On a warm summer night in Charlottesville, the Virginia men’s soccer team faced off against Xavier for its opening game of the season Thursday. The Cavaliers (0-1-0, ACC 0-0-0) displayed impressive control of the game until its final few minutes, when the Musketeers (1-0-0) capitalized on their third shot of the game.

After helping Virginia women’s swimming and diving to its second consecutive national championship, three Cavalier swimmers returned to action to compete at the 19th FINA World Championships in Budapest to represent Team USA, which was led by Virginia Coach Todd DeSorbo.

Virginia opened up its postseason with a 17-10 win over Brown Saturday night to advance to the NCAA Quarterfinals. The Cavaliers (12-3, 5-1 ACC) were helped by an eight-point effort by sophomore attacker Connor Shellenberger and five goals by junior attacker Payton Cormier to pick up a convincing win against the Bears (10-6, 4-2 Ivy League). Additionally, freshman goalie Matthew Nunes produced 16 saves with a 61.5 save percentage in his first NCAA postseason game.

Virginia men’s lacrosse travels to Providence, R.I. Saturday to take on No. 8 Brown in the first round of the 2022 NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championship. The Cavaliers (11-3, 5-1 ACC) enter this postseason in search of their third consecutive NCAA Championship while the Bears (10-5, 4-2 Ivy League) look to continue their impressive season after becoming the Ivy League regular-season champions.

Virginia wrestling closed out their season over the weekend at the NCAA Championship in St. Louis, Mo. The Cavaliers had eight wrestlers qualify for the tournament, with four of them advancing to the second day of competition. Graduate student Brian Courtney had a strong performance, advancing all the way to the quarterfinal. Additionally, three wrestlers advanced to the round of 12 — the most for Virginia since the 2015 NCAA Championships.

On Thursday night in Chapel Hill, Virginia lacrosse faced off against North Carolina for the first time since last year’s NCAA Tournament semifinal clash. The Cavaliers (6-0, 2-0 ACC) once again came out on top against the Tar Heels (5-2, 0-1 ACC). After being down 10-9 at the end of the first half, Virginia went on a 6-1 run in the second half to earn the victory.
