Virginia Athletics announced further measures to address its financial struggles due to the COVID-19 pandemic Friday, reducing the number of staff and leaving open positions unfilled across the department. When hearing lacrosse and Virginia in the same sentence, many Cavalier fans immediately turn their minds to the seven-time and defending national champion Virginia men’s lacrosse team. The women’s lacrosse squad has made the NCAA tournament 25 straight times under Coach Julie Myers, and in the mid-2000s was a force in the national lacrosse scene, competing in four national championships from 2003 to 2007.

The Hokies (5-6, 5-5 ACC) burst out to an early 27-7 lead against the Cavaliers (5-5, 4-5 ACC) before maintaining the upper hand throughout the second half to bring the Cup back to Blacksburg. Controversial play-calling and a poorly played first half hurt Virginia as the Cavaliers struggled to muster any offense against a solid Hokie defense.

Following a heartbreaking 19-14 loss to No. 12 Miami Saturday, Virginia football returns to Charlottesville on a four-game skid — it’s longest losing streak since the 2017 season — and welcomes a top-15 opponent in No. 15 North Carolina Halloween night. The Cavaliers (1-4, 1-4 ACC) have spooked the Tar Heels (4-1, 4-1 ACC) in years past, holding a three-game winning streak in the South’s Oldest Rivalry. However, this year’s matchup features a struggling Virginia team against a surging North Carolina squad with sophomore quarterback Sam Howell, who was the 2019 ACC Freshman of the Year, and Chazz Surratt, 2019 first-team All-ACC and graduate linebacker.

The Hurricanes (4-1, 3-1 ACC), on the other hand, have benefitted from the stellar play of senior quarterback D’Eriq King, who is sure to be an All-ACC selection come season’s end.
