Following a 38-21 loss at the hands of NC State last week, Virginia football looks to get back in the win column against Wake Forest Saturday. This week’s match-up will be the first time the Cavaliers (1-2, 1-2 ACC) have faced the Demon Deacons (1-2, 0-2 ACC) since 2016 when Coach Bronco Mendenhall’s squad fell 27-20 after a late Wake Forest comeback. It still remains to be seen if Virginia starting sophomore quarterback Brennan Armstrong will be cleared to play after he entered concussion protocol against NC State.

Virginia football fell to NC State Saturday afternoon 38-21. The Wolfpack (3-1, 3-1 ACC) got out to an early 24-0 lead off of stellar quarterback play from sophomore Devin Leary, and while the Cavaliers (1-2, 1-2 ACC) mounted a late surge, it wasn’t enough to overcome the early deficit. Turnovers and penalties plagued Virginia, as the Cavaliers had four turnovers and seven penalties totaling 81 yards.

Following a 38-20 victory over ACC Coastal rival Duke, Virginia football gears up for what is conceivably its toughest game of the season against No. 1 Clemson. The Cavaliers (1-0, 1-0 ACC) have dropped four straight contests to the Tigers (2-0, 1-0 ACC) and will certainly have to bring their A-game if they want to topple a Clemson squad that has won two national championships in the last four seasons.

Virginia football kicked off its season against Duke Saturday, securing the win 38-20. The Cavaliers (1-0, 1-0 ACC) forced seven turnovers from the Blue Devils (0-3, 0-3 ACC) to secure their sixth straight win against Duke. While sophomore quarterback Brennan Armstrong had an up and down debut, he rallied in the fourth quarter, throwing two touchdowns to help Virginia pull away from their ACC Coastal rivals.

Following the conclusion of Thursday’s practice, Coach Bronco Mendenhall named sophomore Brennan Armstrong as the starting quarterback for Virginia football. The Shelby, Ohio native competed with junior transfer Keytaon Thompson for the starting job throughout the duration of fall camp. Armstrong’s experience with the offense likely helped him edge the newcomer Thompson, who only had two months to become acquainted with the Virginia offense.

Following an off-season dominated by the COVID-19 pandemic, Virginia football looks to improve on a 2019 season that saw the Cavaliers defeat rival Virginia Tech, win the ACC Coastal division and secure an Orange Bowl appearance. However, this year’s Cavalier squad will look noticeably different from the 2019 team, as Virginia loses stalwarts in quarterback Bryce Perkins, wide receivers Joe Reed and Hasise Dubois, linebacker Jordan Mack and cornerback Bryce Hall to graduation. Along with the changes in the personnel, the Cavaliers’ schedule will also look different. Due to the pandemic, Virginia will play a conference-only 10-game slate that includes challenging road games against Virginia Tech, Florida State, Clemson and Miami.

Following weeks of discussion between football Coach Bronco Mendenhall, Athletics Director Carla Williams and other University leaders, members of the Virginia football team returned to Grounds July 5 for voluntary workouts. While two student-athletes tested positive for COVID-19 out of the 110 tested upon arrival, Williams remains cautiously optimistic about the return of college athletics come September.

Virginia football secured a massive commitment Friday afternoon, as Mississippi State quarterback Keytaon Thompson has decided to join the Cavaliers. The dual-threat quarterback will be immediately eligible for two seasons as a graduate transfer and is poised to challenge sophomore quarterback Brennan Armstrong for the starting role.

After going undrafted in the 2020 NFL Draft, former Virginia stalwarts quarterback Bryce Perkins and linebacker Jordan Mack signed contracts to join the Los Angeles Rams and Carolina Panthers, respectively. The pair join fifth-round draftees wide receiver Joe Reed and cornerback Bryce Hall in the NFL.

Senior wideout Joe Reed heard his name called on Day 3 of the 2020 NFL Draft, as the former Virginia standout was picked by the Los Angeles Chargers in the fifth round with the 151st overall pick. A native of Charlotte Court House, Va. and longtime Virginia fan, Reed concluded his storied Virginia career as the Cavaliers’ all-time leader in career kick return yards and should prove to be a potent kick returner at the next level.

Despite social distancing measures preventing any in-person recruiting, Virginia men’s basketball secured a commitment from Rice sophomore guard Trey Murphy III. Murphy III will sit out for one year and will be eligible to play for Coach Tony Bennett’s squad for two years starting with the 2021-2022 season. The 6-foot-8 guard chose Virginia over offers from Villanova, Pittsburgh and Houston, among other schools.

However, before the Cavaliers learn who they’ll be playing in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, they will have to navigate the gauntlet that is the ACC Tournament.

No. 22 Virginia downed Miami 46-44 in Coral Gables, Fla. Wednesday night. The Cavaliers (22-7, 14-5 ACC) benefitted from a foul by the Hurricanes (14-15, 6-13 ACC) with eight seconds left, which sent sophomore guard Kihei Clark to the free-throw line. Clark sank both free throws to seize the lead for Virginia, then Miami senior guard Dejan Vasiljevic missed a last second layup attempt with one second left to seal the Cavaliers’ seventh straight win.

The Hokies (15-13, 6-11 ACC) tied the game at 53 with 11.3 seconds left, but sophomore guard Kihei Clark responded with a three-pointer with 2.1 seconds on the clock to secure the win for the Cavaliers (20-7, 12-5 ACC).
