In the second annual “Battle for the DMV,” No. 12 Virginia men’s soccer defeated the defending national champion and top-ranked Maryland 2-0 Monday night courtesy of first-half goals by junior forward Nathaniel Crofts and sophomore forward Daryl Dike.

After only dropping one match through the first and second rounds of NCAA Tournament play, the No. 5 Virginia men’s tennis team (24-4, 10-2 ACC) hosted the Charlottesville Super Regional against No. 12 Stanford (19-7, 5-3 Pac-12) Saturday. The Cavaliers last faced the Cardinals in their first match of the 2019 ITA Men’s Team Indoor Championship in Chicago, where Virginia emerged victorious 4-2.

After falling to Wake Forest in the ACC championship, the No. 5 Virginia men’s tennis team (23-4, 10-2 ACC) hosted the first and second rounds of the NCAA Men’s Tennis Tournament at the Snyder Tennis Center in Charlottesville. The other three teams in Virginia’s section of the bracket were St. John’s (19-6, 4-0 Big East), East Tennessee State (20-5, 7-0 SoCon) and No. 17 South Carolina (18-10, 5-7 SEC).

This past weekend, No. 5 Virginia men’s tennis (21-4, 10-2 ACC) headed to Cary, N.C., to compete in the ACC Men’s Tennis Championships as the No. 2 seed at Cary Tennis Park. The Cavaliers last won an ACC men’s tennis title in 2017 on their way to their fourth national championship.

After a shaky first season under Coach Andres Pedroso, No. 5 Virginia men’s tennis (14-3, 5-2 ACC), has looked more like the Cavaliers that won four national championships between 2013 and 2017 and 13 straight ACC championships from 2004-16 under former Coach Brian Boland. Although Virginia may not be the juggernaut it was in years past, this season is shaping up to be a big step in the right direction for Pedroso’s squad.

Almost 10 years ago, Tony Bennett dialed up Craig Littlepage, former Virginia athletic director, to turn down Virginia’s offer and continue coaching at Washington State. Yet, according to the Daily Press, Bennett’s wife, Laurel, encouraged him to take more time in making his decision — time that has led to four ACC regular season championships, two ACC Tournament championships, four ACC Coach of the Year awards, two Henry Iba Awards, an AP National Coach of the Year award and seven NCAA Tournament appearances.
