Gov. Terry McAuliffe (D) announced Thursday afternoon that he would commute the death sentence of Ivan Teleguz to life imprisonment without parole instead. Teleguz was convicted in 2006 in the murder-for-hire of his ex-girlfriend Stephanie Sipe. She was found murdered in her Harrisonburg apartment in 2001.

Former Charlottesville Police Chief Timothy J. Longo is currently working to develop a master’s program in public safety administration in the School of Continuing and Professional Studies. The program, which will be largely online-based, is expected to launch in spring of 2019, pending approval.

Many University students took part in the protest for women’s rights, marching from the southeast corner of the National Mall to the Washington Monument on Constitution Ave.

The University has seen a large number of protests over the past three years, responding to topics ranging from sexual assault to divestment to the presidential election. Next week, protests will continue as the Inter-Sorority Council hosts the University March for Women, related to this weekend’s Women’s March on Washington. But protest at our school is not new: student activism has played a prominent role on Grounds throughout the University’s history.
