Jurors ruled unanimously in favor of the plaintiffs for four of the six claims in the trial of the “Unite the Right” rally organizers Tuesday, awarding more than $25 million in damages. The claims plaintiffs were granted damages for included conspiracy to commit violence, assault and battery, racial harassment and intentional infliction of emotional distress. The verdict comes after four weeks of proceedings and two days of jury deliberation in a trial held more than four years after the events of Aug. 11 and 12, 2017.

Roughly 200 students and community members gathered at the University Police Department station on the Corner Saturday afternoon and marched to Carr’s Hill to protest the Kyle Rittenhouse verdict delivered Friday. Rittenhouse was acquitted on all five counts brought against him after he shot and killed two men and injured a third in Kenosha, Wis. Aug. 25, 2020.

Charlottesville City Council held a special meeting Friday to announce Marc Woolley as the new city manager. During another City Council meeting earlier that week, Councilors and members of the public expressed aggravation over a stunt on Oct. 29 during which individuals affiliated with the Lincoln Project mimicked the events of the “Unite the Right'' rally in front of Governor-elect Glenn Youngkin’s tour bus.

The University announced all students will transition from Google to Office 365 beginning in spring of 2022 in an email sent Wednesday by Dana German, associate vice president and deputy chief information officer. Students quickly expressed anger and frustration at the decision — a petition created Wednesday has amassed over 3,800 signatures.

The Blue Ridge Health District announced it will begin vaccinating children aged five through 11 starting the first week of November in an update released Friday. The Food and Drug Administration authorized emergency use for the Pfizer vaccine in this age group Friday.

While the race for Virginia’s next governor heats up, voters in Charlottesville and parts of Albemarle County also have the chance to vote for who will represent the 57th District in the Virginia House of Delegates in the Nov. 2 election. Charlottesville residents will also vote for new City Council, School Board, Commonwealth Attorney and Board of Supervisor seats.

University leaders announced an extension of the University’s indoor mask mandate in a community-wide email sent Friday morning from Provost Liz Magill and Chief Operating Officer J.J. Davis. Attendees of ticketed events at the John Paul Jones Arena will also be required to provide proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test result before entering the venue, effective Oct. 18.

Fourth-year College student Emma Camp posted a sign on her Lawn room door Friday — Constitution Day — in protest of the University’s newly implemented policy which restricts the size of signs allowed on Lawn room doors. The sign contained the full text of the First Amendment and takes up almost the entirety of the door — far larger than the size of the two message boards the current policy restricts signage to.

Congressman Bob Good visited the University Tuesday to discuss current events and conservative values for an event held by the Young Americans for Freedom at U.Va. Good represents Virginia’s 5th U.S. congressional district — the Commonwealth’s largest district — which includes Charlottesville, the University and the entirety of Albemarle County and as far south as Danville to as far north as parts of Fauquier County. About 20 students attended the event.

The University has disenrolled 238 students, primarily undergraduates, for not complying with the University’s COVID-19 vaccine requirement, which the University announced in May and applies to all students living, learning and working on Grounds in the fall. Four students previously disenrolled came into compliance with the mandate Thursday, and the remaining have one week to comply with the mandate.
