Former governor Terry McAuliffe won the Democratic nomination for governor with 62.2 percent of the vote as of Tuesday evening. House of Delegates member Hala Ayala received the Democratic nomination for Lieutenant Governor with 37.5 percent of the vote, and current Attorney General Mark Herring won the Democratic nomination for attorney general with 56.6 percent of the vote.

The Board of Visitors’ Buildings and Grounds Committee approved the rededication of the Frank Hume Memorial, per a recommendation made by the Naming and Memorials Committee, during its meeting Friday afternoon. The committee also provided updates on the future of the George Rogers Clark statue, which will be removed by the end of the summer, and the near-completed construction of the new Student Health and Wellness Center.

University leaders announced that the University will require students who live, learn and work on Grounds in the fall to be fully vaccinated in an email Thursday. Students may seek a medical or religious exemption to the requirements, though they will be subject to weekly prevalence testing if the exemption is granted.

The University has decided to increase the indoor gathering limit from six to 25 people and the outdoor limit from 25 to 75 people, effective immediately, Dean of Students Allen Groves announced in a University-wide email sent Monday evening. This decision came as a result of low COVID-19 case counts in the University community over the past several weeks.

The Frank Hume Memorial Fountain was found vandalized with red paint and graffiti reading "You can't silence us" and "BLM" Monday morning. The area has since been fenced off and covered with tarps. The memorial was last found covered with paint a week prior on April 19 — the University is currently investigating both incidents and will “hold those responsible accountable” according to University spokesperson Brian Coy.

The Committee on Naming and Memorials hosted a two-hour listening session Wednesday evening during which members of the public commented on the future of the Frank Hume Memorial Fountain. Over 20 individuals, including University students, alumni and members of the community, called in to the session to appeal to the committee, all of whom expressed their support for the removal of the memorial in its entirety.

The Blue Ridge Health District officially entered phase 2 of vaccine distribution Monday, which includes all individuals 16 years and older. Individuals in the BRHD eligible under phase 2 should be receiving email invitations throughout the week where they can schedule appointments via the Vaccine Administration Management System. Roughly 45,000 people became eligible under this expansion, according to BRHD Deputy Public Information Officer Jason Elliott.

The University Board of Elections announced results of the 2021 election Friday night. Third-year College student Abel Liu was elected Student Council president with 81.2 percent of the presidential election vote. His opponent, third-year College student Gavin Oxley, garnered 1,778 votes, or 18.8 percent of votes cast.

In a letter Wednesday, Jewish student leaders “denounce, in the strongest of terms, the recently-surfaced antisemitic comments” made by Gavin Oxley, Student Council presidential candidate and third-year College student. In the comments, which were made in response to a pro-life Instagram post, Oxley compared abortion to the Holocaust, calling abortion “the greatest genocide of all time.”

The University increased its outdoor gathering limit to 10 individuals following declining case counts and positivity rates in the last several weeks, according to a Spring 2021 Update email sent Thursday. The gathering limit for indoor events will remain at six. The update email was issued by University President Jim Ryan, Provost Liz Magill, Chief Operating Officer J.J. Davis and Department of Medicine Chair Mitch Rosner.

The Academic and Student Life Committee of the Board of Visitors met Friday afternoon to approve the establishment of 11 new professorships and two new degree programs. The committee also made enrollment projections for the next seven years and heard from two professors about their experiences with hybrid teaching. Following the committee meeting, the full Board met to provide a summary and conclusion of the meetings that took place Wednesday through Friday.

The Health System Board of the Board of Visitors met Thursday to share updates on COVID-19 care, vaccine rollout and on the U.Va. Health Cancer Center. The meeting was conducted virtually over Zoom and the open session was streamed live on YouTube.

In separate statements issued Friday, both the Inter-Sorority Council and Inter-Fraternity Council suspended all in-person gatherings, effective immediately. The ISC ban will be in place until at least March 12 while the IFC said it plans to reevaluate its suspension at the end of March.

The University’s COVID-19 tracker reported 252 new cases Thursday through Sunday, bringing the total number of active cases at the University to 840. This more than doubles the 108 new cases reported over the same four-day period last week.

University administrators answered questions regarding the recent spike in COVID-19 cases within the University community and speculation that it is due to in-person Greek life recruitment at a virtual town hall Friday afternoon. The seven panelists also discussed vaccine efficacy, the presence of the B.1.1.7. U.K. variant and plans for next fall, among other topics.
