The Virginia State Senate passed a bill Tuesday that would codify the existing faculty representative member on the University's Board of Visitors into law, as well as adding a staff representative to the Board for the first time. Both positions are nonvoting additions to the Board, which consists of 17 voting members responsible for long-term planning at the University.

Students returned to the classroom for the start of spring semester last week as the University continues to honor the three lives lost in the November shooting — second-year College student Devin Chandler, fourth-year College student D’Sean Perry and third-year College student Lavel Davis Jr. Two other students, third-year College student Mike Hollins and second-year College student Marlee Morgan, also suffered non-fatal injuries. While University operations will continue as scheduled, there are many resources available to students, such as free counseling and opportunities to gather in shared places.

The University announced plans for a $300 million biotechnology institute Friday, funded in large part by a $100 million gift from Charlottesville investors Paul and Diane Manning. The first phase of the institute will be additionally funded by an initial investment of $50 million from the state and $150 million from the University.

The Dean Chairs Directors of the School of Architecture voted this week to update the academic eligibility requirements for student employment from a 3.3 minimum GPA to a general academic good standing, as defined by the University. The eligibility change will begin applying to the application cycle for spring 2023 positions.

In a short video released Wednesday evening, University President Jim Ryan shared details of a memorial service to be held honoring the lives of D’Sean Perry, Lavel Davis Jr. and Devin Chandler, as well as the two students confirmed to have been injured in Sunday’s shooting, Cavalier football junior running back Mike Hollins and second-year Marlee Morgan.

Student organizations across Grounds have pooled resources and efforts to support students in the wake of Sunday. From memorial runs to material resources and food, student leaders are responding to the aftermath by providing students various ways to come together as a community and begin healing.

The Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee of the Faculty Senate introduced a resolution to censure College and Darden alumnus Bert Ellis’s appointment to the Board of Visitors at its general body meeting Thursday. If passed, the resolution would act as an official statement disapproving Ellis's appointment to the Board. The Board also began voting on four proposed amendments and voted to table a fifth proposed amendment.

Around 800 Emmet/Ivy Garage permit holders experienced disruptions after being required to move their vehicles from the Emmet/Ivy Garage to the John Paul Jones Arena Parking Garage by Sept. 18 at 10 p.m. Permit holders were not reimbursed for the disruption and students expressed concern because the new parking area was further away and not covered.

Close to 200 faces of Black Virginians now line the walls of the Albert and Shirley Small Special Collections Library, offering visitors a personal glimpse at life during the peak of the Jim Crow era. On display from now through June of next year, the exhibit features portraits taken in the Holsinger Studio in an effort to redefine perspectives on Black history.

The Board of Visitors has recently taken an increased interest in the University Guide Service, a special status organization at the University responsible for providing both admission and historical tours for prospective students, families and other visitors. Although the group works closely with the Office of Admission to provide a positive guest experience, the Guide Service remains student-run and independent.

The Faculty Senate held an informational meeting Wednesday to educate members on five proposed amendments, which the Senate will vote on at its next meeting. The fifth and final amendment, which determines the way Senators elect their representative to the Board of Visitors, was debated among attendees.

Julian Robertson, Jr., the namesake of the McIntire School of Commerce’s Rouss-Robertson Hall, passed away Tuesday. Robertson was deeply connected to the McIntire School of Commerce, frequently hiring and mentoring Commerce School graduates through his hedge fund Tiger Management.

This fall, inspired by global awareness of Ukrainians fleeing Russian invasion, Batten Prof. Kirsten Gelsdorf, former policy analysis and innovation chief for the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, will teach a course with the goal of helping some University students more deeply understand the humanitarian crises facing the world today.
