The University’s Office of Admissions received 25,063 early action applications for the Class of 2024, the most it has received in its history. This is the ninth consecutive year the University has received a record number of early action applicants since it was instituted in 2012, but this year’s increase is substantially greater than the past two years. The University received 21,446 and 21,573 early action applicants in 2017 and 2018, respectively.

Local Charlottesville attorney Elliott Harding is challenging incumbent Virginia State Sen. Creigh Deeds, D-Bath, for the 25th District Virginia Senate seat this week as an independent candidate. Harding, a 2012 University alumnus of the College, previously worked as legislative director for former 5th District Rep. Tom Garrett, R-Buckingham, and served as chair of the Albemarle County Republican Committee. On his campaign website, Harding highlights criminal justice reform, equal access to education and energy deregulation as some of his top priorities.

Officers from the Charlottesville Police Department responded to a report of vandalism to the Stonewall Jackson statue in Court Square Park at 8 a.m. Monday, according to Charlottesville Police Public Information Officer Tyler Hawn. The noses and hands of the allegorical figures on the base of the statue appear to have been chipped away.

The University’s Homer Statue, built by Jewish-American sculptor Moses Jacob Ezekiel in 1907 as the “Blind Homer With His Student Guide,” is currently under restoration on the South Lawn and is expected to be completed this week.

The parents of late University student Otto Warmbier had dinner with President Donald Trump at the White House Saturday evening, according to reports. U.S. Ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell was also slated to attend the dinner. It is unclear who else was in attendance or when the dinner was planned.

The University chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, NAMI on Campus at UVA, has launched a petition calling for better mental health education and improved mental health resource allocation at the University. The petition calls for three primary changes to promote mental health education on Grounds, including the implementation of educational programs, increased funding for mental health resources and an initiative to coordinate mental health efforts at the University.

The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality and the City of Charlottesville investigated a large amount of killed fish in Meadowcreek Gardens Park last Thursday. In the following days, City and University officials determined the fish kill was caused by a contaminated construction pit at the former University Hall site. University Hall formerly housed the University’s basketball programs and was demolished in May as part of the University’s athletics renovation plan.

The University extended Lawn room offers Thursday to 47 rising fourth-year students for the 2019-2020 school year. Seven out of the 54 total Lawn rooms are endowed or reserved for members of certain student organizations — including the Jefferson Literary and Debating Society and Kappa Sigma fraternity — and have not yet been filled.

The Board of Visitors will convene Wednesday for its December meeting, which is scheduled to run through Friday. The Board will discuss approving increases in tuition rates and fees, establishing professorships and approving funding for new buildings and renovations for the inpatient rehabilitation hospital at the University’s Fontaine Research Park.

The University hosted an “Ours to Shape” event with University President Jim Ryan Tuesday afternoon in the Newcomb Hall Ballroom. The event, attended by approximately 120 faculty and students, provided a platform for members of the University community to discuss goals — including a focus on sustainability and community engagement — for the University in the context of Ryan’s “Ours to Shape” initiative.

Both the University and the national chapter of Beta Theta Pi are investigating U.Va.’s fraternity chapter after allegations of “blatant discrimination and violence” at a recent party held by Student Hip Hop Organization and I.M.P. Society at the Beta Theta Pi fraternity house.

Virginia has seen a 104.6 percent increase in the number of returned absentee ballots as compared to this time in last year's gubernatorial election, according to the Virginia Public Access Project, as of Oct. 30. Over 200,000 ballots have been cast so far, eclipsing the 123,221 absentee ballots which were submitted statewide in the 2014 midterms. Virginia’s Fifth Congressional District also saw a notable increase in ballots with 16,394 ballots submitted by Oct. 30, up from 8,006 at the same time last year.

Student and non-student organizations registered approximately 2,500 University student voters around Grounds before the Virginia voter registration deadline this past Monday. The deadline concluded months of organizations’ efforts on Grounds to increase student voter registration.
