The concert of natural and man-made beauty of the University’s Pavilion Gardens have enchanted visitors, students, faculty and staff for the past 70 years. Many, however, are not aware of the behind-the-scenes maintenance, history and surrounding architecture of the gardens since the University’s inception.

After months of decreasing COVID-19 cases coupled with the rollout of COVID-19 vaccines in the United States, the end of the pandemic seemed to be drawing near for most. For perspective, the first United States COVID-19 case was reported on Jan. 21 of last year, making this Saturday 19 months since the virus first arrived in the United States from Wuhan, China. However, in recent weeks, COVID-19 cases in Virginia have been increasing at a rate similar to the holidays, when cases and hospitalizations stressed the University Hospital. As the University is set to bring back students for in-person classes this next week, U.Va. Health experts discuss potential causes for this case uptick and give their thoughts on what the future may hold.

The anniversary of the declaration of COVID-19 as a global pandemic was a significant milestone for many, as normal life has been out of sight and mind for most Americans for over a year now. The 13-month toll that the pandemic has taken on the University community has resulted in the phenomenon of pandemic fatigue for many individuals — defined as the general “demotivation to follow recommended protective behaviors” by the World Health Organization. Beyond just demotivation, students have experienced significant changes to overall mental health and wellness due to added stress and the disruption of normalcy.

COVID-19 vaccination in the state of Virginia has proven to be a logistical and organizational challenge, but officials on the forefront are leading initiatives to streamline the process and construct solutions. The roadblocks have included inefficient online registration, difficulties distributing vaccines to geographically isolated locations, and issues with equitable distribution and inadequate vaccine supply.

The Autism Data System for Research Integration, Visualization and Exchange is a networking and educational resource for people with autism and their families seeking to electronically connect with resources and researchers. Launched in November 2019, DRIVE is a part of the larger Autism Supporting Transformative Autism Research program in the Curry School of Education, which seeks to improve the quality of life of individuals with autism by gathering and performing research across disciplines while also educating those diagnosed and their families.
