Kenyon Bonner, newly appointed vice president and chief student affairs officer, announced that Cedric Rucker, interim senior associate vice president and dean of students, will remain in his position through the 2024-25 academic year. Bonner, who started his position as VPSA Jan. 16, said that Rucker’s continued presence will allow him to better understand students' needs and inform the University’s national search for a permanent dean of students.

Dean of Students Allen Groves will leave the University effective July 1 to serve as senior vice president of student experience at Syracuse University after more than 14 years at the University, according to an announcement from UVAToday Monday.

Fully vaccinated individuals are permitted to gather outdoors without masks, according to an update to the University’s COVID-19 safety guidelines. The new policy is in accordance with new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines released Tuesday. The CDC considers individuals fully vaccinated two weeks after their final dose of the vaccine.

The University’s COVID-19 tracker reported 229 cases Tuesday, all of which were students — this surpasses Monday's record of 121 cases in a single day by more than 100. Before Monday, the previous single-day record was Sept. 17, when 59 cases were reported in a single day due to a testing backlog. This brings the total number of cases in the University community this semester to 974 — 605 of which are active.

The Charlottesville Police Department released 17 minutes of body camera footage of a Wednesday arrest on the Downtown Mall after many community members questioned an officer’s use of force caught on video by an onlooker. In the video, a 36-year-old man identified as Christopher Gonzalez is seen being kicked by the arresting officer and taken to the ground with an arm around his neck following an altercation.

James Fields Jr., the avowed neo-Nazi who drove his car into a crowd of counter-protestors during the Unite the Right rally in August 2017, killing Charlottesville resident Heather Heyer and injuring dozens of others, plans to appeal his state conviction at the intermediate appellate court level. His attorney filed the appeal Monday.

A female University student reported a robbery and sexual assault Wednesday night, according to an alert sent to the University community and press releases from the Charlottesville Police Department. The victim told the University Police Department a man she did not know struck her in the face, sexually assaulted her and stole her wallet and other items around 9:33 p.m. Wednesday.

On the one-year anniversary of a violent torchlit white supremacist rally at U.Va., University President Jim Ryan acknowledged the wide-ranging impacts the events had on the community and apologized to the counter-protesters who were attacked by white supremacists near the Jefferson statue last August.
