While Virginia fans mourn the loss of what could have been another remarkable March Madness run, junior forward Jay Huff is already preparing for his final season as a Cavalier. The 7-foot-1 forward stepped firmly into his role this year — starting 18 games and averaging career-highs in points, rebounds and blocks. Now, as many are looking for activities to fill empty schedules, Huff is gearing up for his senior season.

Recently, Virginia Athletics, the ACC and the NCAA officially canceled the remainder of the 2020 season for all spring and winter sports due to the COVID-19 outbreak. For Virginia, this news affects 15 different teams across three winter sports — men’s basketball, swimming and diving and wrestling — and seven spring sports — baseball, golf, lacrosse, rowing, softball, tennis and outdoor track and field. While these teams weren’t able to finish their years, let’s take a look at how they were doing before their seasons were cut short.

Coming off a season-high win against Boston College Wednesday, Virginia downed Pittsburgh 59-56 Saturday afternoon at Petersen Event Center. While the Panthers (15-13, 6-11 ACC) overcame a 14-point deficit late in the second half, they were unable to take back the lead in the final seconds of regulation. Sophomore guard Kihei Clark paced the Cavaliers (19-7, 11-5 ACC) with 17 points, while senior forward Mamadi Diakite, junior guard Tomas Woldetensae and senior guard Braxton Key recorded 10 points apiece in the contest.

Virginia excelled offensively against Boston College, picking up a 78-65 victory at John Paul Jones Arena Wednesday night. The Cavaliers (18-7, 10-5 ACC) took a 20-point lead in the second half as five players entered into double digits scoring. Despite impressive performances by senior forward Nik Popovic and freshman guard Jay Heath, the Eagles (13-14, 7-9 ACC) couldn’t overcome the deficit as Virginia caught fire.

Virginia faced ACC-foe North Carolina Saturday night at Dean E. Smith Center, clinching a 64-62 victory with a three-pointer by junior guard Tomas Woldetensae. Both teams put on a show, trading the lead into the final seconds of the game. But the Cavaliers (17-7, 9-5 ACC) silenced the crowded stadium as Woldetensae drained his sixth three-pointer of the night with less than a second on the clock.

Despite an incredible second-half comeback, Virginia men’s basketball fell to No. 5 Louisville 80-73. The Cavaliers (15-7, 7-5 ACC) trailed the Cardinals (21-3, 12-1 ACC) by 14 points at halftime but were able to take a 70-68 lead late in the second half. Junior guard Tomas Woldetense found his shot from behind the arc, sinking 7 of 10 three-pointers and leading Virginia on offense with a season-high 27 points. Sophomore guard Kihei Clark was also a major contributor, scoring 23 points and dishing seven assists.

Virginia took down No. 5 Florida State Tuesday night, upsetting the Seminoles (17-3, 7-2 ACC) 61-56 at John Paul Jones Arena. The Cavaliers (14-6, 6-4 ACC) kept the game close throughout, answering Florida State at every stage. Senior forward Mamadi Diakite led the team with 19 points while sophomore guard Kihei Clark contributed 15 points and had four assists.

After losing three straight games in conference play, Virginia managed to squeeze out a win against Georgia Tech Saturday night in Atlanta. The narrow 63-58 victory came after a contested second-half performance as the Yellow Jackets (8-10, 3-5 ACC) took advantage of the Cavaliers’ (12-5, 4-3 ACC) inefficient offense to cut down the lead. Virginia’s defensive effort made the difference, and junior forward Jay Huff came up big for the Cavaliers with a career high six blocks and 17 points. Senior forward Mamadi Diakite similarly recorded 17 points while sophomore guard Kihei Clark served up seven assists.

After beating Syracuse on the road earlier this season, No. 18 Virginia fell to the Orange (9-7, 2-3 ACC) in overtime Saturday at John Paul Jones Arena. The Cavaliers (11-4, 3-2 ACC) looked to have enough momentum late in the second half, but a trail of missed opportunities allowed Syracuse to tie the game 43-43 at the end of regulation. Virginia fell behind early in overtime while the Orange ignited offensively, recording enough three-point shots to run away with the lead.

No. 16 Virginia took down Navy Sunday at John Paul Jones Arena, winning 65-56 after temporarily giving up the lead in the second half. The Cavaliers (10-2, 2-0 ACC) shot 53.2 percent from the field while the Midshipmen (6-5, 0-0 Patriot) only converted 38.8 percent of their field goals. Senior guard Braxton Key, senior forward Mamadi Diakite, sophomore guard Kihei Clark and freshman guard Casey Morsell scored in double-figures in the matchup. Clark recorded a career-high 13 assists en route to a double-double.

No. 9 Virginia men’s basketball team’s offensive struggles were apparent against South Carolina as the Gamecocks (8-4, 0-0 SEC) grinded out a 70-59 win Sunday at John Paul Jones Arena. The Cavaliers (9-2, 2-0 ACC) allowed a season-high 33 points in the first half but were able to fight back into the game in the second half. Virginia’s 19 turnovers proved fatal as South Carolina ran away with the lead in the final minutes of play.

Following its first loss to Purdue Wednesday, No. 5 men’s basketball rebounded to defeat No. 7 North Carolina at John Paul Jones Arena Sunday afternoon, running away with the lead in the final minutes of the matchup. The Cavaliers (8-1, 2-0 ACC) combined strong defense with enough points on offense to bring down the talented Tar Heels (6-3, 1-1 ACC) in their most difficult game thus far. The teams fought for the lead throughout the game, but senior forward Mamadi Diakite, junior guard Tomas Woldetensae and redshirt freshman Francisco Caffaro combined for 33 points to lead the team to a 56-47 victory.

No. 7 Virginia cruised past Maine by a score of 46-26 Wednesday despite a disappointing offensive performance. The Cavaliers (7-0, 1-0 ACC) had the opportunity to completely blow out the Black Bears (2-4, 0-0 AEC) but missed shot after shot and failed to run away with the lead. Its relentless defense, however, allowed Virginia to come away with a wide-margin victory to extend its non-conference winning streak to 21 games.

No. 7 Virginia managed to come away with a 48-45 win against Arizona State in the final of the Air Force Reserve Hall of Fame Tip-Off Sunday. The Cavaliers (6-0, 1-0 ACC) held the lead against the Sun Devils (3-2, 0-0 Pac-12) through the first half, but had to fight their way back after a 19-0 run by Arizona State. Freshman guard Casey Morsell had his best game of the season, leading Virginia with 19 points and scoring the go-ahead three-pointer to give the Cavaliers the final advantage.

No. 3 Virginia cruised past Radford Saturday night in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, dominating both sides of the ball to lead to a 3-0 shutout at Klockner Stadium. The Cavaliers (17-1-3, 6-0-3 ACC) certainly made it difficult for the Highlanders (16-6, 7-3 Big South), recording 34 shots with 18 on frame while holding Radford to just five shots with three on goal for the night.
