This past Saturday, O’Hill Field — which has been mostly abandoned during the winter — felt truly alive for the first time in months. Students relaxed on the hillside with friends, caught up on homework while sitting in the grass and enjoyed one of the most beautiful spring days of the year so far — complete with 75 degree weather and a slight breeze. However, what made this scene truly memorable was the Pakistani music reverberating across the field, multicolored kites flying high above the ground and the shouts of excitement ringing out as a cricket player swung his bat — all signs of Basant’s arrival at the University.

For second-year College student Frank Valdez, leaving his home in Houston and coming to the University was very difficult. He did not know anyone, did not feel worthy of coming to a top-tier college institution and faced unexpected challenges when a close member of his family passed away during his first semester. He was over 1,200 miles from home, and it was hard for Charlottesville to feel like one — that is, until Valdez became a member of the Latinx Peer Mentoring Program. Through this program, he began to find his place in the University.

As University students begin the process of studying for and taking a plethora of finals these next two weeks, there are some students preparing for an additional reality — saying their final goodbyes to a life in Charlottesville they have spent five months forming and now must leave behind.

When newly-hired Virginia Film Festival Director Jody Kielbasa relocated to Virginia in 2009, his instinct was to connect with Charlottesville residents to understand the role of the Virginia Film Festival in the community.
