The State Council of Higher Education for Virginia officially approved the creation of the University’s School of Data Science last week, allowing the project to go forward with planning and faculty hiring. The school is planned to be located in the Emmet/Ivy corridor and will include the construction of a 70,000-square-foot academic building.

Pharrell Williams — Grammy award-winning musician and producer, entrepreneur, philanthropist, activist and fashion designer from Virginia Beach, Va. — delivered the keynote address at Friday’s Valedictory Exercises as part of the University’s Class of 2019 graduation weekend. Throughout his speech, he referenced humility and passion for education and social change as keys for success.

Rep. James R. Roebuck, Jr., Democratic Chairman for the 188th Legislative District in Philadelphia County — as well as the University’s first black Student Council President — spoke in the Rotunda Dome Room on Friday as part of the University’s Symposium and Presentation Series: The Road to Charlottesville: Revisiting Equity, Education, and Engagement. Around 40 faculty and students were in attendance at the event.

Take Back the Night hosted an event titled “Love Shouldn’t Hurt” Wednesday, which focused on intimate partner violence and abuse. The event featured speakers from the Maxine Platzer Lynn Women’s Center, the Shelter for Help in Emergency, Green Dot, One in Four and the One Love Foundation — all of which are organizations committed to stopping sexual assault and partner violence.

The National Transportation Safety Board released a preliminary report Wednesday revealing the garbage disposal truck that collided with an Amtrak passenger train carrying GOP members of Congress in Crozet Jan. 31 entered the crossing after the gates at it were down. The crash resulted in one death and six individuals were admitted to the University Health System for injuries.

The University Board of Visitors approved a 2.5 percent increase in tuition for most entering in-state students and a 3.5 percent increase for most entering out-of-state students during Friday’s closed meeting. The Board also discussed plans for increased security protocol on Grounds.

The previously vacant lot at the corner of Barracks Road and Emmet Street is currently being redeveloped with a new purpose. The City of Charlottesville approved a site plan at 1200 Emmet Street in March and construction began this past summer.

The University’s School of Law’s library is digitizing the 336 legal texts catalogued by the University librarian in 1828. The project, which began digitization in May, will create a virtual library where users can scroll through the “shelves,” view high-resolution images of the book spines and reach bibliographical essays about each text.
