Virginia men’s basketball lost by 25 points March 19 against Colorado State in the First Four of the NCAA Tournament. The Cavaliers bowed out to No. 13 seed Furman in the opening round a season prior, missed the tournament entirely in 2022 and and fell to No. 13 seed Ohio in the first round in 2021. The program hasn’t won a game in the “Big Dance” since its national title run in 2019, leaving questions surrounding Coach Tony Bennett’s future in Charlottesville.

When Virginia men’s basketball bows out of the postseason, it usually goes out with a bang — elimination at the hands of a 16-seed, on a buzzer beater or in back-to-back overtimes against underdogs. This year, Coach Tony Bennett’s team went out with a whimper. Virginia’s season ended March 19 in Dayton, Ohio as Colorado State charged to a 67-42 win in the First Four of the NCAA Tournament. The Cavaliers continued their run of tournament failure since the 2019 National Championship — having either missed the tournament entirely or gotten eliminated in its first game — for the fourth year in a row.

The Cavaliers took on two ACC foes — Boston College and NC State — Thursday and Friday respectively in the conference tournament. While both matchups were sent into overtime, Virginia was only able to capitalize on the extra minutes once, emerging victorious against the Golden Eagles but coming up short against the Wolfpack. Marked by embarrassing levels of free-throw shooting, one win and one loss in Washington, D.C. placed Virginia in a precarious position heading into Selection Sunday.

Virginia men’s basketball has had an uncharacteristically streaky season in 2023-24. The Cavaliers (22-9, 13-7 ACC) won nine of their first ten before dropping four of their next six. Then, to start off the academic semester, they won eight games in a row, then dropped four of seven, only to close out the regular season with a quality 72-57 win against Georgia Tech. The win against the Yellow Jackets clinched the No. 3 seed for Virginia in the ACC Tournament.

Virginia men’s basketball couldn’t handle the pressure at Cameron Indoor Stadium Saturday, as No. 10 Duke channeled the energy of a ravenous home crowd. The Blue Devils (23-6, 14-4 ACC) sprinted to an easy victory over the Cavaliers (21-9, 12-7 ACC) with a final score 73-48. Duke’s sophomore center Kyle Filipowski torched Virginia, scoring 21 points on 14 shots and corralling 7 rebounds, while the Cavaliers were completely outplayed inside, getting outscored 44-18 in the paint and outrebounded 42-29.

Since the golden age of Virginia men’s basketball began in 2013-2014, the Cavaliers (20-8, 11-6 ACC) have missed the NCAA Tournament just once — a lost season in 2022. As the calendar flipped from 2023 to 2024, it looked like Virginia might miss March Madness for the second time in three seasons.

Wake Forest nearly stole a win from Virginia in Charlottesville Saturday, but the game-tying shot from junior guard Cameron Hildreth was missed at the buzzer to seal a 49-47 Virginia victory. The Cavaliers (20-6, 11-4 ACC) led for the majority of the second half, but a ghastly 1-11 performance from the free-throw line nearly prevented the win against the Demon Deacons (16-9, 8-6 ACC).

Virginia’s trademark packline defense and turnover-free offense led the way Monday night as the Cavaliers (18-5, 9-3 ACC) obliterated Miami 60-38. The Hurricanes (15-8, 6-6 ACC) came into the game shooting 38 percent on three-pointers as a team but made only two of their 20 attempts from beyond the arc for the night. Virginia, meanwhile, made five out of 11 attempts. The Cavaliers also generated 20 assists on 26 made field goals, while turning the ball over just three times compared to Miami’s 11 giveaways.

In a close 66-65 victory, Virginia men’s basketball barely scraped by a talented Clemson squad. Leading by as many as 12 points early in the second half, foul trouble and poor free throw shooting nearly handed the Tigers (14-7, 4-6 ACC) the win. Clemson, ranked as high as No. 13 in December, had not won back-to-back games in the new year and were coming off of a home victory over Louisville, while the Cavaliers (17-5, 8-3 ACC) had won five straight after their own midwinter slump.

Virginia defeated Louisville in a comfortable road win Saturday, picking up its second road victory of the year and their fourth overall since the start of the semester. The Cavaliers (15-5, 6-3 ACC) dominated the Cardinals (6-14, 1-8 ACC) in the first half, using Coach Tony Bennett’s famous packline defense to allow just two field goals in the half’s first 18 minutes. Even after allowing significantly more field goals in the second half, Virginia left the KFC Yum! Center with a 69-52 win.

After losing their first four road games by an average of 20 points, Virginia managed to pick up their first true away win of the season against Georgia Tech, 75-66. The Cavaliers (13-5, 4-3 ACC) rode a combined 39 points from their star guards, sophomore Isaac McKneely and senior Reece Beekman, to victory over the Yellow Jackets (9-9, 2-5 ACC) that had knocked off previously-ranked Clemson in their previous game.

Currently sitting in a three-way tie for fourth place in the ACC, Virginia has fallen slightly behind the success of last year as the Cavaliers shared the regular season conference title with Miami. A 13-5 record is nothing to scoff at, but a 1-4 road record with four costly blowout losses is certainly cause for concern entering the gauntlet of ACC play.

In their first electric meeting of the season, Virginia defeated Virginia Tech 65-57 in the season’s first Commonwealth Clash at John Paul Jones Arena. The Cavaliers (12-5, 3-3 ACC) rode a breakout performance from graduate student forward Jordan Minor, who had a season high in minutes, points and rebounds, all while limiting the Hokies (10-7, 2-4 ACC) to 10 points in the paint. Senior guard Reece Beekman continued his run as Virginia’s go-to option, matching Minor’s 16 points while dishing 4 assists and forcing 4 turnovers.

After two years with the program, Virginia football Coach Tony Elliott has amassed a 6-16 record, with only three wins in conference play. It should be noted that Elliott has faced perhaps the toughest two seasons of any coach in the United States, with the murder of three teammates scarring the 2022 season and causing the final two games to be canceled.

Virginia men’s basketball opened ACC play for the 2023-24 season by demolishing Syracuse 84-62 Saturday at home. No. 24 Virginia held off a late charge from West Virginia to win the third place game of the Fort Myers Tip-Off, 56-54. The Cavaliers (5-1, 0-0 ACC) needed a clutch free throw from senior guard Reece Beekman with two seconds left in the game to put away the Mountaineers (2-3, 0-0 Big 12). Beekman stuffed the box score along the way, registering 12 points, five assists, four rebounds and four steals, but also coughed up four turnovers and shot just 1-4 from deep.

Wisconsin led wire-to-wire in the first game of the Fort Myers Tip-Off as they bested No. 24 Virginia, 65-41. The Badgers (3-2, 0-0 Big 10) were led by the inside presence of junior forward Steven Crowl, who had 15 points on 7-10 shooting paired with 10 rebounds — 4 of them on offense. The Cavaliers (4-1, 0-0 ACC) had no answer for the seven-footer, getting routed on the boards 48-21 overall and 20-3 on the offensive glass.

2023 has not been a banner year for Virginia football, especially on the offensive side of the ball. The Cavaliers (2-8, 1-6 ACC) fare poorly in almost every traditional offensive stat, ranking 80th or lower in points per game, turnovers per game and yards per game. On a more granular level, the offense has averaged 1.8 points per drive, and 5.15 yards per play, good for 90th and 100th in the country, respectively. In Bill Connelly’s offensive SP+ metric, Virginia ranks 104th.
