The University Guide Service hosted a specialized historical tour Monday for community members surrounding the theme of building names on Grounds. The tour marked the first day of U.Va. History Week, a week of themed tours hosted by the University Guide Service. Each day of the week will host tours centered around different questions related to the University’s history. The theme for Monday’s tour was "Who should our buildings honor?"

Members of the University community came together Monday evening to hold a vigil in the Amphitheater for the victims of the recent terrorist attack committed at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand Friday. The event, hosted by the Muslim Students Association, was attended by over 100 community members, including Dean of Students Allen Groves and University President Jim Ryan.

The Office for Equal Opportunity and Civil Rights released a response last month outlining new goals meant to increase access and representation among minority groups at the University. The statement, dated Nov. 15, was released largely as a response to a report released by the Asian Leaders Council and a proposal put forth by the Latinx Student Alliance in October which called for increased support, resources and representation for Asian/Asian Pacific American students and Latinx students respectively.

Charlottesville’s two representatives in the Virginia General Assembly — Sen. Creigh Deeds (D-Bath) and Del. David Toscano (D-Charlottesville), the outgoing minority leader in the Virginia House of Delegates — held a joint town hall meeting Tuesday evening at Monticello High School to discuss the upcoming Virginia General Assembly session, which begins in January. The Democratic caucus in the legislature saw sweeping gains in the 2017 off-year elections, and Democrats are looking to flip the state house blue in the upcoming 2019 elections.

Following the midterm elections, members of the University Democrats and College Republicans are now seeking to shift their focus from the campaigns to focus on activism and lobbying. The pivot comes after months-long campaign efforts, which saw members of both the University Democrats and College Republicans knocking on thousands of doors and making thousands of phone calls in order to encourage voters to take part in the midterms.

Virginia has seen a 104.6 percent increase in the number of returned absentee ballots as compared to this time in last year's gubernatorial election, according to the Virginia Public Access Project, as of Oct. 30. Over 200,000 ballots have been cast so far, eclipsing the 123,221 absentee ballots which were submitted statewide in the 2014 midterms. Virginia’s Fifth Congressional District also saw a notable increase in ballots with 16,394 ballots submitted by Oct. 30, up from 8,006 at the same time last year.

University President Jim Ryan will be inaugurated Friday as the University's ninth president, with a number of events planned throughout the weekend. This inauguration is the ninth time a president of U.Va. has been sworn in and is planned to be one of the larger inaugural celebrations in the University’s history.
