The University’s Inter-Sorority Council chapters celebrated the end of a fully in-person recruitment process with bid day on Madison Bowl Field Sunday. Current members of each sorority met new members with balloons and colorful signs in hand after new members opened their bid cards together without the presence of COVID-19 gathering restrictions that had moved much of recruitment online in previous years.

The University’s Board of Visitors held its final session of the semester Friday afternoon in the Rotunda to discuss the aftermath of Nov. 13, mounting concerns of a global economic recession and procedural changes. Members heard remarks from University President Jim Ryan, Lily Roberts, student member of the Board and fourth-year Architecture student, and Faculty Senate Chair Patricia Jennings.

The University’s Board of Visitors met in the Rotunda for its quarterly Finance Committee meeting Friday from 8:30 to 9:45 a.m. During the meeting, Board members approved price increases on meal plans, housing and graduate tuition as well as funding for various University projects, including the construction of an Olympic Sports Center.

Members of the Charlottesville community gathered Monday evening at Carver Recreation Center to hear from the three final candidates for Charlottesville chief of police — Latroy Durrette, Michael Kochis and Easton McDonald. Candidates answered pre-selected questions from community members and the general public, many of which focused on accountability structures and community engagement.

Students, faculty, administrators, community members and families filled John Paul Jones Arena Saturday afternoon to honor the lives of the three victims and two students injured in Sunday’s shooting. Held at 3:30 p.m., the memorial service included musical selections, prayers, reflections from close friends and a poignant moment of silence.

Virginia Senator Tim Kaine and fifth district congressional candidate Josh Throneburg were hosted by University Democrats, Black Student Alliance and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People at U.Va. Wednesday for a public student forum in Newcomb Commonwealth room. Kaine and Throneburg presented their respective platforms and encouraged students to vote in the upcoming midterm elections.

Members of the Persian Cultural Society and the Afghan Student Association gathered at the foot of the Homer statue Monday with Iranian flags and handmade signs denouncing the violent subjugation of Iranian women and the violence against ethnic Hazaras in Afghanistan.

Young Democratic Socialists of America launched its housing campaign Wednesday evening on the steps of the Rotunda. Members participated in power mapping activities, assembled mold prevention packages for students in need and delivered a letter of their grievances to University President Jim Ryan’s home at Carr’s Hill.
