The University Democrats hosted a debate between House of Delegates Democratic candidates Sally Hudson and Kathy Galvin in Nau Hall Monday evening. The primary election for the 57th District seat is scheduled for June 11, but early voting opens April 28, providing students with the ability to vote before they leave Grounds.

In the proposed budget for fiscal year 2020, the Charlottesville City Council has proposed a one percent increase in both lodging and meals taxes and an additional allocation of $255,159 to the Charlottesville Affordable Housing Fund, a program targeted at providing housing to impoverished city residents.

Brian Pinkston, project services associate director for planning at facilities management for the University, announced his campaign for Charlottesville City Council Feb. 6 with the slogan — “A Voice for the Common Good.” Pinkston is one of several candidates seeking a nomination in the Democratic Primary for City Council — which is June 11.

At the City Council meeting Monday night, members of the Council unanimously moved to rename Preston Avenue after Asalie Minor Preston — an African-American woman who taught in Albemarle County Public Schools during the era of segregation and namesake of the Minor-Preston Educational Fund — instead of its previous namesake Thomas L. Preston.

In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day last week, the Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy hosted a “Batten Hour” talk Monday afternoon on racial inequality at the University in which Latinx and black student leaders discussed their proposals on how to make the University a more inclusive place for multicultural students.
