All students, faculty and staff returning to Grounds for the spring semester are now required to get COVID-19 booster shots, per an email sent Tuesday afternoon by University President Jim Ryan, Provost Liz Magill, Chief Operating Officer J.J. The University extended its mask mandate to the end of the fall semester, with the exception of activities that are “particularly difficult” while wearing a mask, per a University-wide email sent Friday afternoon by Provost Liz Magill and Chief Operating Officer J.J. Davis. Activities under the exception include cardio exercise inside IM-Rec facilities and some drama performances.

The University is requiring all full-time and part-time employees be vaccinated against COVID-19 by Dec. 8, per a Thursday email from Provost Liz Magill and Chief Operating Officer J.J. Davis. The requirement is in accordance with President Joe Biden’s Executive Order 14042, which was issued Sept. 9 to require employees of organizations with federal contracts be fully vaccinated, including institutions of higher education which contract with the government.

Trick-or-Treating on the Lawn this year has been canceled, per an email sent to Lawn and Range residents Friday evening from interim Dean of Students Julie Caruccio and Gay Perez, assistant vice president of student affairs. The decision was made following guidance from public health experts in an effort to reduce the spread of COVID-19 to children and high-risk individuals in the Charlottesville community.

Despite climbing temperatures, rain and mask mandates, the University welcomed a total of 4,648 total new residential undergraduates to Grounds last week for move-in and Wahoo Welcome programming ahead of the first week of classes. With more than 41 percent of incoming students identifying as a racial minority, the Class of 2025 is the most diverse class in University history.

New masking guidelines will be in place at the University for both vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals, Provost Liz Magill and Chief Operating Officer J.J. Davis announced in an email sent Friday afternoon. All individuals are required to wear masks indoors on University property — including academic and administrative buildings, libraries, labs, dining halls, IM Rec facilities, and U.Va. Health locations — regardless of vaccination status beginning Monday, Aug. 9.

In the early hours of Saturday morning, a group of about 100 community members and activists gathered to watch the statues of Robert E. Lee in Market Street Park and Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson in Court Street Park be removed, marking the end of nearly four years of litigation and activism. The statues will be placed in storage and their stone bases will be removed at a later date.

The University Police Department has arrested Charlottesville resident John Wayne Jordan in connection with the burglary at 1827 University Ave Thursday morning. Jordan has been charged with grand larceny, trespass after being forbidden to do so and entering a dwelling with intent to commit larceny, assault and battery or other felony.

A burglary was reported to the University Police Department at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, according to a University-wide email sent by Chief of Police Tim Longo Thursday. The break-in occurred between the hours of 4:09 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. at Madison Hall at 1827 University Ave., which houses the Office of the President and the Office of Major Events.

The Charlottesville community celebrated Juneteenth with both in-person outdoor events and virtual talks and music performances Saturday. Juneteenth — the longest running African American holiday — commemorates the end of enslavement in the U.S. and marks the day that federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation and free all enslaved people in the state.
