In its latest attempt to counteract change at the University, the Jefferson Council held its second annual meeting with several speakers and group members in attendance. The meeting discussions ranged from topics like diversity, equity and inclusion practices and affirmative action to “woke” culture at the University. The Council, led by Bert Ellis, Board of Visitors member and Darden Alumnus, was formed to protect the oldest traditions of the University — namely preserving Thomas Jefferson’s legacy and the Honor system.

During the 2021 legislative session, Democrats in the General Assembly passed a landmark bill to legalize marijuana possession, becoming the first southern state to do so. But while possessing under one ounce of marijuana became legal immediately, dispensaries and retail sellers will not be able to operate until 2024. Further legislation and regulation needs to be passed — this didn’t happen in the General Assembly’s most recent session when lawmakers failed to come to a consensus on how to begin the process of regulating and selling marijuana products, putting the safety of Virginians in jeopardy. The assembly’s inability to properly regulate and legislate retail sales has led to a gray-area where the drug is legal to possess but not to purchase — a gray-area that could cost lives.

I remember waking up to an email from Housing and Residence Life in early July. I had been assigned to Courtenay House — colloquially known as one of the “motels” — for my first-year housing assignment. When I mentioned it to some of my upperclassmen friends, they laughed and told me it might be rough, but that I would survive. On move-in day, my family arrived to find it a little dusty — or so we thought. By late September, my roommate and I would come to learn that the “dust” — in our cabinets, closets, drawers and on our AC unit — was actually mold. We were not the only students on Grounds to make this unsettling discovery.

“Eat your vegetables” is a phrase we have heard since we were children. And though your parents or doctors might have bothered you by repeating this saying, it is absolutely true. Vegetables provide the body with vitamins, fiber and other nutrients essential for life. And while some of these nutrients can be gathered from other sources, it is often difficult or expensive to obtain supplements in high enough quantities to ensure the same benefits. At the University, not only is healthy eating often expensive, but it is incredibly difficult to come by. Through advertising on the U.Va. Dining's website, it claims that it is committed to “empowering you to make the healthy choices you’re looking for,” as well as passionate about “dining programs that make it easy to eat well.” After reviewing its practices, there is little evidence that holds up that mission statement. Simply put, more needs to be done to ensure that students can make healthy choices at low or no additional cost, and at the moment, there is only minimal progress.
