Student Council’s Representative Body voted to approve their $317,787 annual budget for the current academic year Tuesday — the budget is $11,000 more than last year’s final version. This is the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic that Student Council will operate on an annual budget rather than two semester budgets.

Student Council passed a resolution amending the 2023-24 budget to include $3,750 in additional funding towards improving Ramadan meals for students. The General Body also approved fourth-year College student Matthew Docalovich as the new Rules and Ethics Chair after the previous chair, third-year College student Seamus Oliver, stepped down from the position.

The Board of Visitors Academic and Student Life Committee discussed changes to undergraduate advising programs, faculty recruitment and research funding opportunities at its meeting Wednesday afternoon. Among the presented advising adjustments was an updated student resource website, new advising software and changes to the School of Engineering’s advising program.

During Tuesday’s Student Council General Body meeting, Holly Sims, vice president for administration and graduate Batten student, presented a proposal to increase the Student Activities Fee by $2 for the 2024-25 academic year for a total fee of $58. This move comes on the heels of a $6 increase in the current academic year.

The first two Student Council General Body meetings of the semester consisted of preparation for challenges due to turnover in Student Affairs administration. Leadership also held an interest fair for prospective applicants during Tuesday’s General Body meeting.

The University will honor the lives of students Devin Chandler, Lavel Davis, Jr. and D’Sean Perry with a memorial tree planting and a plaque dedication Sept. 8. The event will take place at the Betsy and John Casteen Arts Grounds from 3 to 4:30 p.m. and is open to any member of the University or local Charlottesville community — registration is optional but encouraged.

When logging into U.Va.’s Student Information System over the summer, University students will notice a new requirement to complete before the fall semester begins — an active attacker training and response module. In the wake of November’s shooting, students will now be required to complete this training every two years.

The Board of Visitors Finance Committee approved a $5.4 billion budget for the University’s Academic Division, Medical Center and the College at Wise during its meeting Friday. The fiscal year’s budget, which begins July 1, accounts for 5 percent pay increases for faculty and staff. The Board also reduced tuition increases for in-state undergraduate students from a 3.7 percent increase to a 3 percent increase following a request from the Virginia Secretary of Education.

Chabad House at U.Va. — a space for Jewish students offering Shabbat dinners, challah baking workshops and weekly Cafe Chabad’s — has found a second home at 17 Elliewood Ave. Married couple and co-directors Rabbi Shlomo Mayer and Channa Mayer hope that the new location on the Corner will make it more convenient for students to participate in its activities and programs.

Student Council unanimously approved its 2023 summer budget — which reduced funding by over $34,000 compared to the 2022 summer budget — during Tuesday's meeting. Representatives also heard from and approved the formation of 10 new Contracted Independent Organizations and voted to amend their bylaws regarding the ability to file complaints about fellow Student Council members.

2021 College alumna Morgan Bettinger’s lawyer published a draft of a lawsuit last month alleging that the University violated Bettinger’s first amendment and due process rights. In 2020, Bettinger was sanctioned in a University Judiciary Committee trial over a statement she made at the site of a protest. Bettinger claims that the legacy of the UJC trial damaged her mental health and her reputation. The lawsuit has not been filed.

Student Council’s summer 2023 budget was presented by Holly Sims, vice president for administration and fourth-year Batten student, at Tuesday’s meeting with significant cuts from last year’s budget. The proposed budget, which will operate from the end of the spring semester’s exams until the first few weeks of September, allocates a total of $59,852.60 to Student Council — a $34,380.05 decrease from last year’s summer 2022 budget.

Student Council’s General Body tabled SB 23-22, a bill to amend the Council’s bylaws to reduce the number of operating budgets from three to two during Tuesday’s meeting. Rather than separate budgets for the fall, spring and summer the bill would allow Student Council to create one budget to encompass the fall and spring semesters and one to encompass the summer.

New members of Student Council led the term’s first General Body meeting Tuesday, where representatives passed eight legislative bills to approve Executive Board appointments and appointments to the President’s Cabinet, the Administrative Branch, the Organizations Branch, the Support and Access Services Branch.

Members of the newly elected Community Coalition officially entered office Sunday after being sworn in by Ceci Cain, former Student Council president and graduate Batten student. In the Rotunda transition ceremony, third-year College student Tichara Robertson took the helm as Student Council president along with fourth-year Batten student Holly Sims as Vice President for Administration and third-year College student Violette Cadet as Vice President for Organizations.

Augie Maurelli, former associate vice president for financial operations, said he plans to be a “change leader” as the new Chief Financial Officer. Maurelli further hopes to improve the University by focusing on new financial managing software, safety initiatives and student financial accessibility from an operational perspective.

Student Council’s General Body did not discuss legislation at Tuesday's meeting but addressed a recent string of deaths at the University. Ceci Cain, Student Council president and graduate Batten student, began this week’s meeting by acknowledging a shooting over the weekend that resulted in the death of a University contractor.
