Student Council’s General Body met Tuesday to re-table a bill that would amend the spring Student Council budget to fund speakers and COVID-19 testing for students as well as discuss the current University-wide elections.
Charlottesville City Council announced current Charlottesville School Board member Leah Puryear will fill the seat that was left vacant after previous Council member Sena McGill’s resigned in January for family reasons. Puryear’s term will begin Feb. 27 and end Dec. 31.
After two weeks of debate, Student Council passed a resolution calling for the implementation of a PILOT — Payment in Lieu of Taxes — program between the University of Virginia and the City of Charlottesville at their meeting Tuesday. Under the program, the University would pay the city a portion of the value of its property tax exemption for the City to invest in public schools and affordable housing projects in Charlottesville.
Charlottesville City Council will select a candidate Tuesday to fill a vacant seat after previous Council member Sena Magill resigned. Six candidates — Alex Bryant, Kathy Galvin, Kristin Szakos, Natalie Oschrin, Lisa Larson-Torres and Leah Puryear — gave speeches during the City Council meeting last week about their goals for the City.
Students returned to the classroom for the start of spring semester last week as the University continues to honor the three lives lost in the November shooting — second-year College student Devin Chandler, fourth-year College student D’Sean Perry and third-year College student Lavel Davis Jr. Two other students, third-year College student Mike Hollins and second-year College student Marlee Morgan, also suffered non-fatal injuries. While University operations will continue as scheduled, there are many resources available to students, such as free counseling and opportunities to gather in shared places.
New members of University President Jim Ryan’s Student Advisory Council named student well-being and representation for transfer students as their reasons for applying to the Council. Members plan to improve University communication with students, provide better financial support for student health-related matters and strengthen the relationships between individual schools in the Council’s first year.
