Last Wednesday, Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico — the island of 3.4 million U.S. citizens. University students have organized this week to raise money for victims in Puerto Rico where the Category 4 storm left residents without electricity or sufficient food and water.

Willie “JR” Fleming, a widely-known advocate for affordable housing for low-income and racial minority communities across the country, was the keynote speaker.

Ten students from colleges across Virginia, including the University, will begin a 70-mile-walk from Charlottesville to Richmond Friday to protest recent threats to repeal pro-immigration legislation. The walkers will rally on the grounds of the Virginia State Capitol when they arrive in Richmond Monday.

The College of Arts and Sciences announced May 8 that Assoc. Astronomy Prof. Kelsey Johnson will be the next director of the Echols Scholars Program. She will take on her new position at the end of May, succeeding Biology Prof. Michael Timko.

The University held a ceremony dedicating a plaque on the north wall of the Rotunda to Capt. Humayun Khan, who served two tours in the Iraq War, Tuesday afternoon. The plaque was previously approved by the Board of Visitors and is a gift from the Seven Society, which has dedicated plaques to commemorate University alumni who lost their life in wars in the past.

The Board of Managers of the University’s Alumni Association named Jenifer Andrasko, a 2000 Darden alumna, as its next president and CEO on April 22. Andrakso will serve as the Association’s first female president since its founding in 1838.

The University Alumni Association announced Malcolm Stewart, a third-year Batten student, as the 23rd recipient of the Sky Alland Scholarship Monday. The scholarship is awarded to a rising fourth-year student at the University and covers their tuition and fees for their following year. It is one of the most competitive undergraduate scholarships at the University.

The Undergraduate Research Network hosted their 16th annual Research Symposium on Tuesday. Undergraduate researchers showcased their work in the Dome Room of the Rotunda throughout the day to engage with faculty members and students interested in learning and getting involved with research.

The Minority Rights Coalition presented their Unpacking Privilege, Understanding Perspective program to the United Nations Women at U.Va. organization Tuesday night. The Unpacking Privilege program aims to increase multicultural sensitivity among University students and bring awareness to issues students may not have encountered. It focuses on topics surrounding sexuality, disability, religion and gender.

The Latino Student Alliance is hosting a weeklong campaign called Follow the X, which will include events to raise awareness of the term “Latinx,” the gender neutral term for “Latino(a).” Members of LSA said the main goal of the week is to show inclusivity and respect for diversity through both words and actions.

Speaker of the House of Delegates William J. Howell (R-Stafford) announced Monday he will not be running for re-election at the end of his term in January 2018. For Howell, this will conclude a 30-year career in the House and a 15-year term as speaker. Howell’s term as speaker is the second longest in Virginia history.
